1. The Galapagos Islands -
The Galapagos Islands, made famous by Charles Darwin, are worth their own trip apart from everything else you want to see in Ecuador. Most tourists stay on boats that travel from island to island. In fact, there aren't even very many places to stay on the islands. However, if you are adventurous or a student, there are cheap lodging options right in the middle of it all. Either way, plan to be out on the water just about every day, traveling from island to island. Be ready for a wonderful mixture of fun, excitement, and adventure.
2. Opportunity to go whitewater rafting in Tena, Ecuador -
If you want to go whitewater rafting in Ecuador, Tena, Ecuador - right in the middle of the rain forest - offers some great options. One of the best companies is Rios Ecuador (Rivers Ecuador). They are extremely professional and adhere to United States regulations for whitewater rafting. The town itself is something to see, and it can be quite an adventure to travel there from Quito. Simply catch a bus from the Quito Bus Station downtown.
3. Access to the Amazon Rainforest -
No trip to Ecuador would be complete without a visit to the rainforest. It is worth the time and effort to plan an excursion. For international students studying at the exclusive Universidad de San Francisco del Quito, check and see if any excursions to their wildlife station called Tiputini are planned. It is an experience that you will never forget. If you are traveling to Tiputini from Quito, be prepared for an extremely long trip by airplane, bus, and boat. Getting there, no matter where you go in the rainforest, is an adventure in itself.
4. Beautiful beaches and coastline -
When you are in large cities such as Guayaquil or Quito, it is easy to forget that Ecuador has any great beaches at all. One of the best areas to visit if you are interested in beaches is in the northwest near the cities of Esmeraldas and Atacames. They have all of the beauty and feel of the Caribbean without all of the people. If you belong to a timeshare organization such as RCI, they have locations near the cities of Esmeraldas and Atacames.
5. The Andes -
No matter where you go in Ecuador, especially if you are traveling from the capital of Quito, you will be confronted with one of the most beautiful and majestic mountain ranges in the world, the Andes. Be forewarned, driving on the mountain highways can be a harrowing experience, even as a passenger. Small villages such as Otavalo are nestled in the mountains and are great to visit. No matter what you decide to do on your visit to Ecuador, you are sure to encounter fun, adventure, and mountains.
