The iPhone 3GS was released in 2009 and although the iPhone 4 has been a smash hit, the 3GS is still one of the top-selling iOS phones. While the 3GS was all the rave two years ago, times have changed and it's time to say goodbye to the iPhone 3GS.
No Facetime
Video chatting via Facetime is one of the best perks to owning an iOS device, but if you opt for the iPhone 3GS, you'll be left out of the pack. The 3GS was released before front facing cameras were common features and although the 3GS can take decent photos with its rear-facing camera, its lack of a front facing camera means that it'll never be compatible with Facetime.
Forget About iOS 5
The iPhone 3GS was designed to run on iOS 3 and although it can be operated using iOS 4, switching from iOS 3 to 4 on the 3GS results in less battery life and a slower overall experience. iOS 5 is geared to hit iDevices in the near future and is designed to run on devices like the iPhone 5, iPad 2, and other fast iOS devices, but considering how badly the iPhone 3GS suffers with iOS 4, you can forget about any other future operating system updates.
Slow Hardware
Not only is the software slow on the iPhone 3GS, but the internal hardware is also a bit obsolete by today's standards. Under the hood, the iPhone 3GS is packing a 600 MHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor, 256 MB of RAM, a 3 megapixel still camera with VGA recording quality, and only 8 GB of flash memory. The hardware specs of the 3GS pale in comparison to the iPhone 4 and other smartphones that are currently on the market.
You Get What You Pay For
At $49, the iPhone 3GS seems like a great deal '" especially for an iPhone '" but when you look at the pros and cons of buying the 3GS, you're getting exactly what you've paid for. The inferior camera, slow speed, lacking future support, no Facetime, and an overall lacking experience, you'd be a lot better off paying a little more for its successor.
Too Many Other Options
The iPhone 4 will soon be phased out when Apple releases their new smartphone later this year and with all of the other great smartphones on the market, it's time to let the 3GS lay to rest. It was a great phone in its prime and should have been killed off with the iPhone 4, but after two years, it's just too inferior a phone to keep up with modern day smartphones.
