5 Romantic Summer Wedding Proposal Ideas

Jody Morse

There's nothing greater than the feeling of being in love in summer. For this reason alone, a summer wedding proposal can be very romantic. If you're planning to ask for your significant other to marry you, consider these five cute summer proposal ideas.

1. In a Hot Air Balloon

Hot air balloons are beautiful, whether it's your first ride or not. Think of the romantic hot air balloon scene in the movie "The Ugly Truth" starring Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler. Being up high in the sky in a beautifully colored hot air balloon can make for a magical summer wedding proposal.

2. On Top of a Ferris Wheel

Proposing when you are at the top of a Ferris wheel can be very romantic, but keep in mind that your average state fair Ferris wheel will probably not suffice. The most ideal Ferris wheel would be overlooking the beach, and you should propose while the sun is setting or at night when everything is lit up and beautiful.

3. Under a Sky Lit by Fireworks

Fireworks are one of the most romantic things that summer has to offer, so why not propose with them in the background? The most obvious time to propose would be on the Fourth of July. If your significant other will find this too cliché, there are alternatives. There are fireworks every day at Disney World in front of Cinderella's castle at Magic Kingdom. Another idea is to contact a local fireworks company and ask them to do a small, private show over a lake or another romantic spot where you would like to propose.

4. With a Sandcastle on the Beach

The beach can be a beautiful place to propose, especially at night as the sun is setting. One of the cutest summer wedding proposal ideas is to propose with the aid of a sandcastle. You could build a sandcastle and then write "marry me" in the sand. You could also use flower petals to spell out the letters for an extra touch. Another option is to hire a professional sandcastle builder. Most charge by the hour and can create elaborate designs, ranging from dolphins and sea turtles to your own faces in the sand. If you decide to hire a professional, have them carve the words into the castle.

5. At a Drive-in Movie Theater

Going to a drive-in movie theater can be a very romantic experience, but proposing there alone is not enough -- unless you're both drive-in fanatics. Consider having a trailer made up and played before the movie starts. This summer wedding proposal can be one of the costlier options on this list, but imagine the look on your significant other's face when you pop the question on the big screen!

In the summer, it may be tempting to hide her engagement ring in a fruity cocktail. However, it's best to avoid putting the ring in food or drinks. There have been cases where women have choked on or even swallowed a hidden engagement ring.

These are great suggestions. I remember when my husband proposed to me. We were living on two different continents at the time, so he proposed over the phone and then again in person when I arrived at the airport just before our wedding. It was actually quite romantic and well worth the wait!
