5 Rules for Granite Countertops

Granite Countertops are durable and attractive, providing a high end look to any kitchen they are installed in.

As a homeowner there are five rules to observe to keep your granite looking greate.

Clean Up Spills Immediately

They may look indestructible but granite is porous. Common liquids such as orange juice, sodas and even alcohol can damage your granite. The reason is because these drinks are acetic in nature and can get into your granite. Even if your granite is sealed, you will want to clean up any spills as soon as possible. A soft cloth or basic paper towel should be sufficient to clean up the bulk of the spill. Follow up with a damp clean rag to pick up any residue.

Hot Pots Are Bad

Thick granite holds up well under heat but not everyone has the luxury of thick granite. Thin strips of granite do not have enough surface area to absorb all of the heat from a pan or pot taken directly off of a stove or oven. Thin granite is commonly used in granite tiles. To protect your surface, use a trivet or pot holder to keep a barrier between the hot item and your granite.

Leave Rock Climbing Outside

Granite is a natural stone but that is where the similarities end. You want to avoid putting excessive weight onto the edges of granite countertops. Do not be tempted to put your weight onto them to help you reach up high. Also avoid having kids climb up or sit on them. Remember the granite is a natural stone and may have subtle flaws within. Excessive weight can cause a crack and nobody wants to have cracked granite in their kitchen.

Avoid Harsh Cleaning Products

Abrasive cleaning products with acid bases should be avoided. If you must use something other then water to clean up a spill, try using mild dish soap..

Seal Your Countertops regularly

The best thing you can do to keep your granite looking great for years to come is to apply a sealant to them. Be sure to get the correct sealant for your granite type. Don't be cheap and pick up the least expensive sealant. A decent solvent based sealer is not that expensive and can be applied to granite countertops to help keep them looking new. Keep in mind that sealers don't make your countertops impervious to stains. They do buy you some time to clean up spills. Also be sure to apply the sealant as recommended (usually every 1 to 3 years).
