5 Rules I love to Break

Rules are important. Rules were made for a reason. And we've all lived with rules our entire lives. From the time we are old enough to understand the word "no", we're expected to follow the rules. It's a wonder our first words aren't "No, no, don't touch that." It's "Don't do this" or "Don't do that" constantly. Sometimes it feels as if the world has so many rules, there's no room to breathe.

But as we grow, we learn that the one thing about rules, they are made to be broken. Even rules like The Ten Commandments get broken constantly. How many of us can honestly say we've never lied?

So, although it may not always be right, here's my list of five rules I love to break.

1. Don't stare. I can remember my Mom telling me this when I was just a little girl. Well, I'm sorry, but I just simply cannot help it. People are so interesting. I love going places and just sitting and watching people. I often catch myself staring at people in restaurants or in shopping malls. Watching people is more entertaining than most movies. And if someone catches me staring, I simply smile at them. This lets them know I mean no harm.

2. Fashion no-nos. I have been known, actually do it quite often, to wear the flannel pajama type pants out in public. Sorry, but they are just so comfortable. And I have to say, I'm not the only one who does this. People seem to dress much more casual these days. Yeah, yeah, I know it's not a good fashion choice, but I'm at the stage where comfort means about as much as fashion.

3. Grammar errors. There's long been grammar dos and don'ts that most people call set rules. One is to not start a sentence with a conjunction. But, I do this quite often. To me, using these words at the beginning of a sentence lets the reader know you are continuing a thought from a previous sentence.

4. Feeding the dog table scrapes. Okay, maybe it's not supposed to be good for him. But when he looks at me with those big sad eyes, I just can't help myself. And when he rewards me with that wagging tail, I feel good. Besides, dogs would have starved to death back when I was growing up if they were only fed dog food. Heck, they were lucky if there were any scrapes left over for them.

5. Speeding. Sometimes I just feel the need for speed. Oh, I don't fly down the highway at a hundred miles per hour. I'm too sensible for that. Speeding to me is about ten miles over the limit. In fact, I've had one speeding ticket in twenty years. My kids call me a slowpoke. However, speeding does seem to be the number one driving violation so I guess I'm not the only one who speeds occasionally.

There now, you've got my list of the five rules I love to break. The last one could get me a speeding ticket. The others usually only generate a shake of someones head or maybe a roll of eyes.
