5 Safe Driving Tips that Could Lower Your Insurance

There are many ways in which you can lower your car insurance rate. Some of these methods include simply being a safer driver. Here are 5 safe driving tips that will probably lower your car insurance premium:

1. Take a safe driving class. Taking a safe driving class at your local DMV can really help lower your insurance premium if you have received a speeding ticket or two in the last two years. Safe driving classes reduce the number of points on your driving record, which in turn helps to lower your car insurance rate.

2. Keep your car repaired and maintained. Many car accidents occur because the driver fails to check basic items such as the car's fluid levels, brakes and suggested tire pressure. This can result in a car engine that seizes while on the road, in a failure to stop the vehicle or in tires that suddenly blow out. Neglecting to check the windshield wipers and/or wiper fluid can also lead to an issue of reduced visibility and an increased chance of having a car accident.

3. Maintain a safe distance. Many drivers will "tailgate" other cars, a situation that can be particularly dangerous on highways. Be sure to maintain at least five car lengths of distance between you and the car in front of you for optimal safety. Alternately, try counting aloud the following when driving: "one thousand one, one thousand two". You should be able to finish this count without passing through the area that the car in front of you just passed. If you do pass through the area, you are following too close.

4. Be careful when driving in winter. Winter driving requires extra care and caution while driving. Do not use the cruise control when driving on snow or you may end up spinning out of control while braking. Also, remember to turn on your headlights and signal ahead of time before turning. If braking, do so gradually and over an extended period of time. Don't forget to keep extra windshield wipers and wiper fluid in your car.

5. Have your car inspected. Especially if you have an older vehicle, it is a good idea to have it inspected. The mechanic will inspect the hoses, solenoids, radiator, belts, sensors, filters and other components of your car to make sure that they are all in good working order. This helps ensure your own safety and the safety of those around you. It also helps ensure that your car does not break down and become stuck on the road.
