Maggie Lee

A Haunting, which airs on The Discovery Channel, explores the paranormal by re-enacting paranormal and unexplainable personal experiences from real individuals who have had encounters with the unknown. These dramatizations are mixed with real interviews with the individuals who experienced the events and experts in the paranormal field. Most individuals disclose their identities, but the show cooperates to protect the identities of individuals who wish to maintain their anonymity while telling their stories. The nature of the events can be considered disturbing and the re-enactments can be considered frightening. This article will outline the top five scariest episodes from A Haunting based on the criteria of shocking content, disturbing re-enactment, unusual events, and intriguing conclusions.

Hungry Ghosts, Season 2, Episode 5.

The wife and children of a globetrotting business executive get transplanted to the Taiwan countryside when he receives a special business assignment. Dramatically different from their home in the U.S., the family already feels disoriented with their new environment when violent paranormal events begin occurring all over the home. With the father gone often on business, the wife and children suffer the brunt of the physically and mentally tormenting attacks. Soon the wife is plagued with nightmares that involve her harming members of her family and fear compounds on top of fear. The family contacts a local priest, who informs them that a tragic loss of life happened on the property years before the house was built. He also identifies that the house was built with deadly construction flaws and designed to enrage the spirits against the living. The priest involves the family in an exorcism that banishes the hungry ghosts from the house and instructs the family on making peace with the spirits outside of the house with offerings.

Monster in the Apartment, Season 4, Episode 12.

Independent young Morgan is excited to begin her life as an adult by moving into her first apartment with a good friend and co-worker, Bob, who just ended a divorce. Unexplainable events began to happen immediately to her, but she felt silly trying to describe them until Bob confided that a ghost child named Joseph had been visiting him. As her roommate became closer to Joseph, her paranormal experiences became scarier and more violent. When Bob was diagnosed with cancer, she lost all ability to communicate with him and the spirit seemed to wage war on her. She consulted with a priest who gave her recommendations on handling the situation but all efforts failed. When she came face-to-face with a demon, not a little boy, she moved from the apartment. Bob, who had alienated himself from all family and friends, also left the apartment and was never heard from again.

Darkness Follows, Season 1, Episode 6.

A young couple moves into a newly renovated urban townhome to build their lives together. When the couple's opposing schedules keep them missing each other and stress begins to build, paranormal incidents and frightening apparitions begin to occur in the house. Doubts about the unexplainable sights and a financial inability to move keep the couple living in the townhome. As time continues, the apparitions and events become stronger and more aggressive. After the husband is physically attacked, they move into a hotel and bring in a paranormal investigation team. The medium, or sensitive, is able to walk through the townhome and "see" the past events that occurred in the space. A story unfolds about a drug-addicted victim and his heartless killer. The details become so horrific and real that the medium is overwhelmed and runs from the townhome. Police reports confirm the unsolved murder in the townhomes years before the properties were renovated. An explanation was provided that theorized that paranormal events may surface after a renovation or other disruption of a property. The couple abandoned the townhome, but continued to seek answers about the paranormal.

The Presence, Season 3, Episode 9.

Single mother Sandy saves enough money to buy her first home and moves her teenage daughter and young son into the residence. When the grandmother moves out, the teenage daughter takes the grandmother's room for a feeling of sanctuary and the young son is given the daughter's problematic room. Immediately, dangerous and frightening events begin to happen to the child and the daughter allows her brother to stay in her peaceful room. With no more children to torment, the spirits begin to harass the mother. She hears voices that aren't there and experiences visions of walls bleeding. A neighbor confides in Sandy that her home was once owned by a family whose teenager performed satanic rituals in the problematic bedroom. Sandy continues to try to live with the torment, even after her daughter has fled to live with a friend, until the spirits mimic her daughter's voice to call out to her. With the assistance of experts, Sandy banishes the evil spirits from her home.

Ghost Hunter, Season 4, Episode 9.

Paranormal Investigator and skeptic Stacey Jones leads her team on a routine investigation of a cemetery. When Stacey has regained her composure, she concludes the investigation and decides not to disclose her personal experience to the rest of the paranormal investigation team. In the weeks that follow, Jamie undergoes a rapid series of personality changes that are dismissed as a "teen phase". His grades plummet, his behavior becomes confrontational and erratic, and he experiences less and less control of himself. His confusion about what is happening enhances his increasingly uncontrolled anger when there is seemingly no one who takes his concerns and confusion seriously. Finally, Stacey reaches out to friends who are experts in the paranormal field. Experts identify that Jamie is possessed by a demon. Jamie undergoes a dangerous exorcism that breaks the demonic possession.
