5 Secrets to Increase Twitter Following

I found a question on Yahoo Answers today asking how a person can increase Twitter following with their account. Rather than answering the question their I decided to create an article for the information as this is a question I see quite often.

1. BUILD A STRONG BIO

Many people overlook spending a great deal of time with their account in favor of getting out their into the Twittersphere. The problem with this is the less quality you put in the fewer followers you will gain. I personally follow everyone until they show reason for me to unfollow them. However I know of those that won't follow bio's that have not taken the time to include a simple picture.

Also, you have 160 characters for your bio information. USE THEM. This is your moment in the spot light. Avoid words like "I, am, the" in favor of more focused keywords that speak directly about what it is that you are doing. In my case that would be to use keywords like "healthy & chocolate."

2. AUTO FOLLOW

Following everyone that follows you can be a real pain. That's why I use Tweet Later for this as well as sending auto DM's. You want to be very careful with auto DM's. Telling me that you have a widget for sale in the first message that you send me will not get my attention. You wouldn't slam your product down a person's throat in real life, why do it over the net? It doesn't work.

3. PARTICIPATE

There are events like #FollowFriday that you can be a part of on Twitter. RT (Retweet tweets that you especially like). My friend @Jawar came up with a concept called PRT which is to publish a portion of the person's profile. A very kind gesture. The point here is to do whatever you can to promote the people you are working with. Doing so will lead to more followers as word gets out that you are a helpful friendly tweeter.

4. ADD VALUE

No matter what your purpose of being on Twitter might be, go beyond yourself with your tweets. Provide value that people following you will enjoy knowing about. Be informative. Be interesting. One way I personally do this is to use a free website called Stuff To Tweet and find things that I believe my personal audience will enjoy knowing about.

5. USE APPS

Twitter without apps is like riding a bike without wheels. You don't go very far. I'll admit Twitter is indeed getting better. However I still use Twitter Grader to find people of like mind through their search utility. Then I follow them and hope for a follow back. No follow back will likely get me to unfollow that individual quite quickly.
