5 Secrets for Landing Your Dream Job

Monica Bullock
The path to your dream job may seem cluttered and unclear, but if you take the right steps, you will find your dream job is not that far away. Even in a tough economy, you can find the job you have always wanted. Do not be deterred by slow economic growth or shrinking budgets. Actively market yourself to connect with employers who want you to be on their team. These secrets are not secret at all, just practical marketing steps using the latest technologies.

Secret #1: Have a Clear Job Picture

"Seeing what's out there" is not a description of pursuing your dream job. Have a clear picture of what that job should look like before you begin searching. If you have no preference about what field you want to work in, then clarify your preferred job in other ways. For example, do you want flexible hours? Would you prefer to work near the beach or for a music company? Having specific criteria will help you hone in on the job that is just right for you.

Secret #2: Play the Numbers

Do some research and make a list of possible employers. Skip the classified eyes; many companies do not advertise for openings, but prefer word-of-mouth. Contact the hiring managers at these companies for details on their hiring process. The more applications you send out, the greater your chances for an interview. If possible, take advantage of a resume distribution service to send out resumes for you. Online job resume posting is another way to get your name out there. Work the numbers, the wider you cast your net, the better your chance of catching a fish.

Secret #3: Hire a Headhunter

Headhunters work as a middleman between companies and potential employees and aid in the hiring of new employees. Often the hiring company foots the bill for these new candidates so cost is a non-concern. Today, candidate management services help job seekers find their dream jobs for a small fee. Candidate managers have the "inside" scoop on what the company is looking for and how a candidate can win the job.

Secret #4: Social Networking

Avoid posting hokey, desperate posts on Facebook or MySpace. Nothing says, "I will take anything" better than desperate posts that read, "Help, I lost my job. Know someone who's hiring?" For your dream job, visit the companies who use social networking and become a fan. Search those sites for information about hiring and for what positions they are hiring.

Secret #5: Cover Letter

Cover letters play a larger role in hiring than some people think. Hire a reputable company to help you create a larger than life cover letter. A solid cover letter could be the difference between hired and not hired.
