5 Signs Your Teenager is in an Abusive Romance Relationship

Michelle Knudson
Teenagers often don't know how to talk to their parents about abusive partners that they may be dating. Daughters might not feel comfortable around mother or father talking about certain things. Here are five signs your teenager is an abusive romance relationship.

Unexplained Bruises

Be concerned about any unexplained bruises that don't make sense. Talk to your teenager about abusive relationships if you notice any unexplained bruises. If your teenager is afraid to talk to you about it then perhaps she or he will talk to a family friend. Look for any grab marks or finger outlines on the bruises.

Withdrawn From Family

You may notice that your teenager seems quiet at the dinner table not talking very much at all. They may seem distant when you ask them questions. They might even pause for a moment when you ask them about the new boyfriend in their life. Silence is a good indicator that something is wrong in most cases.

You Find Bloody Clothes

Blood on clothes may incident that something cruel happened. Blood on clothes may indicate that sexual abuse or physical abuse is going on in the romance relationship regarding your teenager. It might be difficult to talk to them about this so you might want to bring her to a therapist. You might want to tell her that rape or physical abuse is not her fault so that she starts to open up to talk to you. Sometimes teenagers just can't open up to talk to their parents no matter what due to feeling extremely uncomfortable.

Your Teenager Skips School to Avoid The Abuser

Don't automatically yell at your teenager for skipping school. Ask her why she skipped school. If she stays silent then ask her if it is about her boyfriend. If she looks at you and just stares almost crying then you know that you are correct. You need to outright ask her if she skipped school because he hit her or sexually abused her somehow. Ask her if she was being emotionally abused by him as well.

Watch your teenagers very carefully when you ask her questions since body language can tell you certain things. If she flinches when you ask her about her boyfriend then something is obviously going on. If she flinches when you ask her if he sexually abused her then the answer is yes. Notice the way that your teenager is dressed because if she is wearing long sleeve clothes in the summer than she most likely has bruises or something to hide underneath it all. If she's always pulling down on her sleeves, that could be a sign that she is in an abusive relationship as well.

Refusal To Change Clothes in Front of You

As a mother you can tell and know that your teenager is being abused if she refuses to take off her shirt to try on another one to see if it fits. Your teenager doesn't want you to know that she is being abused since she might feel like it is her fault or doesn't know how to tell you. You might want to have your teen undergo a medical exam by a doctor to look for abuse at this point. You have the right to take her to a doctor and not have them tell her exactly what they are doing.
