5 Songs American Idol Contestant Scotty McCreery Should Sing

Chris Houston
American Idol contestant Scotty McCreery is really country. He may be 16 years old but Scotty knows how to sing like some of the veteran country music stars. His Josh Turner is incredible and he recently handled a John Michael Montgomery song quite well. So well, Scotty McCreery advanced into the American Idol final 13.

A few weeks ago, viewers of the show might have asked the question, "who is Scotty McCreery?" I have a strong feeling that much of America is well aware of his deep singing talents after seeing him rattle off a few incredible Josh Turner like performances. His rendition of "Long Black Train" and "Your Man" were astonishingly similar to the original artist. Perhaps the only thing that might scare you about the future of McCreery is that Josh Turner already exists. Still, I think McCreery will do well in his career whether he wins the American Idol competition or not. But what might help is the correct song choice.

Here are five songs I think American Idol contestant Scotty McCreery could use to advance into the final 5 or even contend for the title.

1) Diggin up Bones/Randy Travis
With a voice like Scotty McCreery has, it's inevitable that he'll work out a Randy Travis song before he is finished. My best hunch is that song should be the classic hit 'Digging up Bones'. McCreery has the deep voice to pull it off. The only hitch for the judges is that this song might not offer Scotty enough of an opportunity to showcase his high notes. Still, I think 'Diggin up Bones' is a no brainer for McCreery.

2) Ships That Don't Come In/Joe Diffie
McCreery could shine on this tear jerker from Joe Diffie. "Ships that Don't Come In" is one of the greatest country songs ever to be recorded. Not only could McCreery do himself a favor by singing it, he could also bring some new fans to the Joe Diffie classic. I think McCreery is a natural for this song and would absolutely shine if he is presented the opportunity to sing it.

3) I Love This Bar/Toby Keith
I think a little Toby Keith might be just what the doctor ordered for McCreery to punch his ticket into the final two or three. I Love This Bar is slow and deep enough that McCreery could pull it off without a hitch. I think this song is a great crowd getter and my hunch is the viewing audience would dig it.

4) Amarillo By Morning or The Chair/George Strait
I think either of these timeless George Strait classics would be a great fit for a kid like Scotty McCreery.
McCreery could pull off "Amarillo by Morning" or "The Chair" without any major complications. These are two more incredibly huge country music favorites that would be impressive to pull off in front of the voters who will determine his official outcome.

5) Friends In Low Places/Garth Brooks
The jury is still out on whether Scotty McCreery can pull off such a tough song like "Friends in Low Places." My guess is that he can and will do Garth Brooks at some point during the competition. McCreery can't just stick to Josh Turner songs although he sounds just like Turner.

Those are five songs I think Scotty McCreery could perform and get a huge reaction from on American Idol. McCreery could be limited to his actual choices but I believe any of these would be a strong fit. Would any of these catapult him to the actual title? I think McCreery wouldn't hurt his own chances by performing any of the above songs during the course of the competition-unless he struggles hitting some of the tough notes on "Friends in Low Places."

Can Scotty McCreery win American Idol? It's going to be tough for someone that country to win the overall popular vote when it's all said and done. I think the crossover Lauren Alaina might do a bit better in terms of receiving votes because of her ability to score in different genres. But you never know! That's why they play the games-or in this case, perform the songs. Either way, it's inevitable that Scotty McCreery is well on his way to a record deal. His pipes are just too deep, rich and on key to be denied that opportunity.
