5 Spices that Should Be Kept in the Kitchen

Bridget Ilene Delaney
Anybody who cooks, even just a little bit, needs to make sure to keep spices in the kitchen. Spices give food good flavors and also can help bring out the natural flavor of a food. Here are the top five spices that should be kept in the kitchen.

Salt

Saltiness is one of the basic tastes in humans. Humans need salt, but too much can be harmful. Salt helps to bring out natural flavors in foods and it also helps sweets such as cakes to rise. This can be seen in the fact that most brown recipes do not have salt in the recipe, but most chocolate cake recipes do have salt in the recipe.

Black Pepper

Some people claim that they do not like pepper at all. However, pepper is often used in cooking to help flavor a dish. People who claim they don't like pepper at all probably do not know when they are eating it unless they see it used, see the name of the seasoning, or can actually see the little black spots from the ground pepper. Black pepper can be bought so it is ground or it can be bought in a pepper mill. Either way, it can help add flavor to foods. It can make foods spicier without them become too spicy.

Garlic Powder

People joke about garlic powder being too strong. There is a scene in the television show Life with Derek that has Casey put a tablespoon of garlic into spaghetti sauce instead of a teaspoon of garlic into spaghetti sauce. The pot is large, so it probably did not stink like in the dialogue and more could have been put in that amount of spaghetti sauce. Garlic gives a great flavor to any type of cuisine and it is also good for the body. Garlic salt is not needed as all it is is garlic powder mixed with salt and both spices can be used in cooking.

Onion Powder

Onion powder can be used in almost all type of cuisine as all type of cuisine tend to use onions. Onion powder is great for people who don't like onions or can't digest onions properly. Usually onion powder does not give people problems as it is ground so finely. While onions should never be fed to dogs, the amount of onion powder used for cooking shouldn't hurt them.

Oregano

Oregano should be kept in the kitchen. This seems odd going with the others. However, by keeping oregano in the kitchen, almost any dish can be made to taste like it is Italian. Adding some oregano to things like spaghetti, meats, and even potatoes can help make them taste Italian.
