5 Tacky Animal Print Fashion Blunders to Avoid

Drew Taylor
Animal print clothing has a reputation for being tacky and tawdry. TV shows use it as the go to wardrobe for ladies of the night and other trashy characters, such as Peg Bundy on "Married with Children", but animal print can be fashionable, vibrant and sophisticated on women of all ages. Classic print clothing and accessories also have a timeless feel, making them a valuable, versatile addition to your wardrobe.

Be bold and add animal print to your fashion repertoire. Avoid these five common fashion mistakes and you can stylishly wear animal print without looking cheap.

No Head-to-toe Print
Is that a fashionable ensemble or camouflage? People may wonder if you are wearing too much animal print clothing. In this case, less really is more. Stick with one basic piece or a couple of accessories. For example, try combining python print heels with a little black dress. Also look for plain garments with patterned accents, such as a black blouse with leopard print trim or collar accents.

Avoid Ill-fitting Clothing
Since bold prints can draw attention to problem areas, it is important to choose garments carefully and make sure they fit well. Animal print clothing can be sexy, but that does not mean it has to fit like a second skin. Think twice before wearing patterned tights or stretch pants because the result is often tacky.

No Prey Animals
Giraffe and zebra prints are challenging fashion options. The large scale and pattern of these designs is not as universally flattering as other animal prints, such as python print. With so many great options, it is best to avoid these tricky designs. However, giraffe and zebra print accessories, such as a cute scarf, are usually a safe option.

Do Not Mix and Match Patterns
Unless you are in a production of The Lion King, avoid mixing animal prints. The bold patterns do not work well together. Combining variations of the same design can also create a chaotic, mismatched look. Keep it simple and play up the pattern with complementary solid colors. For example, try wearing a beaded necklace, bracelet or earrings with tones of brown and black to accentuate a leopard print blouse or dress.

Skip Colorful Animal Prints
That neon leopard print headband is probably best reserved for 80s night at the bowling alley or a Halloween costume. Stick with natural and subtle hues when choosing animal print clothing and accessories.

I think there is a fine line between animal print look classy and trashy or gawdy. I also think that if more women followed these golden rules of animal print, trasy and gawdy would be out the window. Great article. :)

Excellent advice. Animal print fashions are lovely if worn the way you explain them!
