1. Don't "go live" with only a couple of posts.
When you are ready to start blogging, be sure to be prepared to complete a profile and include four or five posts in order to keep people interested. No one wants to read one little welcome post only to have the blog remain un-updated for several days or even a week. Make the most of the buzz you'll receive with your first few posts. Plan to post again within 48 hours.
2. Know what you want to say before you start.
Lack of direction can absolutely kill a blog. Take some time to think about what you'd like to say with your blog. Will it be personal, political, or informative? Do you intend to make money with your blog? What audience are you writing for? You may wish to address multiple issues in your blog, but be sure to be structured in how you address each issue (unless it is a personal blog, of course).
3. Consider what blogging service or platform you'd like to use.
There are so many options out there it can take a while to decide which platform you'd like to use. Personally, there are so many wonderful great free blogging websites out there, there isn't much of a need to spend top dollar, unless you really want to get fancy. If you are really into customization, building your own website may be the way to go. Even if you do decide to build your own website, it certainly doesn't have to cost a lot of money or be complicated. That, however, is another topic entirely.
4. Take expenses into account.
If you do decide to get serious about blogging, you may have to shell out some money for a domain name and web hosting service. However, this does not have to be expensive. Doing a little bit of research goes a long way here.
On the other hand, if you are just getting started with respect to blogging, a free service such as blogger.com will do the trick. You'll be amazed at how much customization you can now do with free services such as blogger.
5. Do your research and contact other bloggers.
Before you even sign up for a free service, search for blogs on your topics of interests. You are bound to find like-minded people on-line. By researching other blogs, you will get a feel for what you'd like to include in yours. The best part is this: if you see something that you really like on another blog, chances are that the owner of the blog will be happy to share their content, images, tips, and techniques with you - if you simply ask and give them credit where credit is due.
There are endless possibilities in the blogosphere and there is room for everyone. There is no reason to be intimidated and there is no reason not to blog if you have the interest.
