1. Organization
Read each syllabus and schedule for each of your classes, and mark all the important dates on your calendar. Some classes will have weekly assignments, while others will be more flexible. Keep your books and supplies in one easy-to-access place. Plan out the best times of day for you to read, write, and study. Map out your semester, allowing for some flexibility, and then you can rest easy knowing that you're not forgetting anything.
2. Motivation
As an online college student, you're expected to manage your time and scheduling all on your own. Step up and get your work done, check into your classes daily, and don't fall behind. Don't expect professors to remind you of upcoming deadlines, or to push you to get your work done. Since you're not attending classes on campus, many people in your life may seem to forget you're still in school. (But you won't!) You're an online college student now-you need to be motivated to get your work done on your own without anyone else prodding you along!
3. Patience
Some people will test your patience, by insinuating that online college students have it easy, or aren't as good as the "real thing." Just nod along and change the subject and don't let them get to you. Your program is accredited just as highly as the on-campus one, and you're putting in at least as much work, if not more, as an online college student. Also, be patient with yourself as you learn how to be an online college student. Chances are, this is different from anything you have done before, but stay organized and motivated, and you'll get the hang of it!
4. Sleep
Get as much sleep as you can to rest your body and your brain. It might be difficult since you are likely juggling family and a career with school, but make it a priority. Don't let the on-campus folks tell you any different-online college courses are just as challenging-if not more so-than on-campus classes. The workload is as heavy, or heavier, without the benefit of face-to-face interaction to facilitate learning. You will need to invest a lot of time and energy in your online college classes. Fortunately, they provide you with some flexibility, and since online college students don't live on campus, hopefully you can actually get some SLEEP!
5. A Life!
Don't chain yourself to your computer and books twenty-four hours a day. One of the big benefits of being an online college student is that you have the flexibility to do more in your life. Spend time with your kids, your partner, your friends, your family, and especially, yourself. Find those activities that rejuvenate you and fill you up. This will give you the stamina you need to continue through your somewhat solitary online college career and graduate with the degree you've always wanted!
