5 Things Best Friends Should Never Do

Monica Bullock

Best friends are like personal cheerleaders that give us sustenance and encouragement when we need it the most. In exchange for a shoulder to cry on or an ear to sound in, we offer the same in return. The drive to find this invaluable relationship begins early in life; many of us begin seeking a "best friend" while still in elementary or middle school. Once you have one, there is a delicate, yet unspoken code of conduct expected from a best friend. It is easy to lose your closest pal if you cross one of these lines.

Borrow money

The whole "money thing" is a real testing ground for friends. When she's down, you want to lift her up but at what cost? It is better to surprise your friend with a little cash in an encouragement card than to make a loan to her. Once you loan money, the relationship changes from two "besties" to creditor and debtor. Not a fun place to be when you want to share a few laughs later.

Sleep with boyfriends

In my circle of friends, the practice of sliding between the sheets with your friend's ex is called "sloppy seconds." Even the person she didn't really like is off limits. Once your best friend has stepped out with Mr. X, he should be off your list. Being drunk, vulnerable or out of your mind is no excuse for hooking up with a best friend's ex. There are plenty of guys in the sea, ladies!

Tell a secret

Hearing a secret and telling it is proof that she's no friend. Even in the heat of an argument or a serious misunderstanding the expectation of confidentiality should be respected. Don't tell her secrets to others and if she tells her yours, take note.

Steal the spotlight

There are a few times in life when the spotlight should be all yours--your engagement news or announcing your latest promotion. This is no time for her to announce she's pregnant! While that's big news, she should pick a separate event for that. Stealing your best friend's spotlight is a huge no-no. Let her shine and celebrate her moment.

Leave you behind

A best friend should never leave you behind. Here's the scenario. You stepped out together to the hot new sushi and karaoke bar in town. You scarfed down the California Roll only to have it come back up. While you are hugging the toilet, she's singing a duet with a hot guy who's obviously into her. What should your best friend do?

A. Leave your butt behind and hit the town with Mr. Wonderful or

B. Grab his number and spend her time making sure you got home safely.

Well obviously B! Best friends, don't leave you behind.

Knowing how to be a good friend is key to finding one yourself. While social lines can blur from time to time, it is best to stick to these 5 principles. Doing so will create a stronger, safer relationship you'll value through the years.

I agree with you, Mimi! Best friends would never do any of these things. Some of these are definitely reasons to become "ex friends".
