Laptops are very useful for working on the move. They make it possible to work just about anywhere, in the car, on a boat or plane, or even on the subway. The advent of laptops pretty much eliminated the dead time businessmen used to contend with while travelling from one place to another.
While the laptop is a valuable tool, it does have its downside. Without a general standard for laptop parts, prices for repairs can be almost as costly as the laptop itself. The general portability of the laptop means that it is more likely to experience bumps and jolts than a desktop computer and will probably need more repairs.
Although technology is continuing to advance and parts are becoming smaller and smaller, the laptop simply cannot compete with the desktop computer for hard drive space. The controls leave something to be desired, as well, with the compact keyboard and lack of a real mouse (although one can be attached).
When deciding which laptop to buy, you will be faced with numerous choices. There are a few things to keep in mind when selecting a notebook computer. Let's take a look at them:
1. What will you be using this computer for? If you plan to do mostly work, typing and such, you won't need such a high end machine as if you intend to edit videos or play massive games.
The speed and memory of the laptop you choose will depend on what your plans for it are, so this is an important thing to consider.
2. Will you be on the move a lot? Any laptop can be shuttled to and from work, but if you are going to be slinging that sucker all over the country, you might want to look into buying an Ultra Portable laptop. These models are lighter and easier to carry than other versions, with a smaller keyboard and screen.
3. Are you on a budget? If you don't really need the latest model, then consider buying second-hand. With the rate that computers change, it's often possible to find a model that is only 6-9 months old and at easily half the price. Check eBay and other auction sites to find great prices on used laptops.
4. Battery life. Laptop batteries seldom last more than a few hours, so if you will be working for extended amounts of time on the computer, it might be best to buy a desktop computer instead. Or find a way to charge the batteries while you are out and about.
5. Which brand do you prefer? It is worth doing some research before snapping up the first laptop you see. Different brands have various features and it is best to be aware of all your options before buying.
