5 Things to Consider when Giving Pets as Christmas Presents

Giving a pet as a Christmas gift can be the most rewarding experience of a parent or loved ones life, or the most memorable experience as the recipient of the gift. Bringing a new pet into the life of someone you love is a big decision and there are a few things you should think about before doing so.

1. Put thought into what kind of pet is best for your family - this can vary from adult size to how long they live and how much care they require. If the recipient lives in an apartment then a smaller pet is probably the best choice for them. Parrots and certain reptiles live a long time; 50 years and more.

2. Will your child really do their part when it really comes to taking care of the pet? Every pet requires lots of love, but they also need discipline and a good example to be a model animal citizen. The last thing you want to happen is to have your new pet become lost in your hectic daily schedule and develop some bad habits.

3. What are the necessary items that you must also purchase with the pet you intend to give for Christmas. Certain pets like reptiles and amphibians require a certain type of cage and lighting as well as a heat source. All of these items equal money you must spend initially on the Christmas pet. Puppies, kittens, dogs and cats require a lot less to get started and therefore have been popular Christmas gifts for children for many decades.

4. When giving pets as gifts you must consider how they can be kept without being seen by the recipient until Christmas time. A good tip is to hide the pet at a close friend or family members house. You do not want to get the pet at the last minute in case anything unforeseen happens. You don't want the pet store or breeder to be closed or unavailable if you wait until the last minute and miss your opportunity.

5. The most important thing to consider when giving a pets as Christmas presents is allergies. Make sure that the person you are planning to give a cute puppy or cuddly kitten to is not allergic to them. If you are a parent who wants to give a pet as a Christmas present to your child then you probably already know if they will be allergic or not. But if needed the parents of your significant other or friend would be the best ones to go to for this kind of information without spoiling the surprise. Maybe they can even help you hide your surprise pet until Christmas.
