5 Things You Didn't Know Your Car Insurance Covers

James Hamel
When it comes to car insurance it is difficult to separate the fact from fiction regarding the extent of coverage you have purchased. As always the best way to be sure you have the amount of coverage you want is to check with your real life insurance agent. Those automated phone systems are very limited in regards to how much they can actually tell you.

There is a litany of coverage levels available to car insurance shoppers and often times buyers don't know exactly what they are buying. For example, do you know exactly what collision and comprehensive programs cover? I didn't think so. Here are five things most people don't know that car insurance can cover and how to get them added to your monthly premium if you so desire.

Lightning Hits a Tree In Front of Your House and It Falls On Top of Your Car-This sort of "act of God" incident should be covered by most any self-respecting comprehensive coverage plan with your insurance company. Most insurance companies also offer coverage for things like flood, fire and plague of locusts. Okay, I made up that last one.

A Rock Hits Your Windshield and Leaves a Crack-This is another incident that should be covered by your comprehensive coverage and should pay for a new windshield. If you notice a small scratch in your windshield (which usually happens right before a big crack appears) many insurance companies will pay to have this small scratch sealed and bonded by a windshield repair company. So if you notice a small mark in your windshield left by a rock get it fixed early because it absolutely will turn into a giant crack eventually.

You are Hit by an Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist-While this is a specific type of coverage you have to pay for it is definitely worth it considering how many uninsured motorists there are on the road. Another problem that can arise is being hit by someone with the absolute bare minimum of insurance. So if you get hit by an underinsured motorist and one of your passengers is injured this sort of coverage can help pay for their medical bills.

My Car Was Stolen and There Was a Laptop and a $15,000 Engagement Ring Inside-You might think this sounds a bit farfetched, but I know someone personally that this happened to. This is why you need to make sure you have theft coverage as part of your insurance policy.

My Car was Totaled in an Accident that Was My Fault-This should be covered by your collision coverage which will pay for repairs to the other vehicle. This coverage will also help you buy another vehicle as well. Do be aware that after this accident your premiums will no doubt go up substantially. So getting into an accident is not a wise way to get rid of an unwanted car.

You need to check your facts. Laptops and cash are not covered by theft coverage for your car. You'd need homeonwer's insurance to cover that! Car insurance only covers "permanently installed" items for your car.

Anybody that leaves a 15,000 ring in their vehicle is asking for trouble!
