5 Things You Didn't Know About Translucent Polymer Clay

anonymous
If you've ever played with polymer clay you know that the fun that comes from stamping, cutting, and shaping designs is out of this world. You also know the joy that comes from baking your designs, as the plasticizers in the clay activate and give you a solid piece of art that will last a lifetime. Whether you use polymer clay for jewelry-making, making miniatures, canework, beads, or just abstract art, there's a whole world of polymer clay fun that's about to open up to you if you've never tried translucent polymer clay. Never heard of it? Here are 5 interesting and inspiring facts about translucent polymer clay:

It works just the same as other polymer clays
That's right! There are no special instructions for translucent polymer clay. I have heard that some brands get yellowed if the heat is too high or brittle if baked too long, but assuming you're relatively experienced in the art of baking polymer clay, it is likely that you won't encounter any problems.

It can be mixed with colored clays
Translucent clay does amazing things when mixed with colored clays! You can slightly tint your translucent clay for a stained glass effect, or just thin out your bold colors so that the light will pass through them once baked. While it bakes to a delightful translucent finish, it's nearly opaque while raw, so it can take some trial and error to get just the right amount of tint. Experiment!

It has the same baking time and temperature requirements
Because you can bake translucent and colored clays at the same temperature and for the same amount of time, it doesn't matter how much you mix of which type, because everything will react with the heat the same way. This is great if you do a lot of color-mixing, because then you don't have to worry about adjusting bake times.

It can be mixed with glitter, makeup powders, and coloring agents like spices
Mixing things into translucent clay is half the fun! You can mix glitters, colored powders, and other forms of clay. I have even heard of spices being used as coloring agents, which creates a lovely, natural look, and smells great while baking. Be careful when using glitters and makeup powders to make sure that everything you're using is safe for use in the oven. Consult labels and your craft store carefully before proceeding.

It can be polished to look convincingly like faux gemstones
Sanding and polishing translucent clay gives it amazing depth, and if there are other colors of clay or glitter swirled inside, you can make convincing faux agate, opal, and other gemstones - perfect for designing your own jewelry, adding to mosaics, or using as decoration!

Translucent polymer clay is such a versatile medium, the possibilities are literally endless! Have fun experimenting with the techniques mentioned here, and creating your own creations and variations. There are plenty of polymer-clay-related resources on the web, so finding extra info is a snap! I would recommend using keywords like "translucent polymer clay," "faux gemstone polymer clay," and, "polymer clay tutorial," in your search.
