You can't predict an auto accident, breakdown or other type of emergency, but you can be well-prepared for the incident. Hitting the road with an auto safety kit can help you manage an emergency situation and make it easier to get the help you need. Whether you end up dealing with a flat tire or an engine breakdown, having a few tools and supplies on hand can make the incident that much more manageable. It's also a good idea to pack some non-perishable food items and bottled water.
Here are five other things to keep in your car in case of an accident:
1. First-aid kit. A relatively inexpensive investment, a first-aid kit can help to treat any of those scrapes and cuts from a minor accident or when you are doing your own car repairs. Make sure your first-aid kit is packed with bandages, rubbing alcohol, antibiotic cream, scissors, gauze and latex gloves. Some cold packs can also be a good addition to this kit.
2. Jumper cables. You could end up waiting hours for roadside emergency services to come by and jump start your car. Make sure you have a set of quality jumper cables in the trunk so that you can ask a fellow driver for assistance when your car won't start. This will help you save a lot of time, and even money for services.
3. Blanket. You may end up being stranded at night or when temperatures start to drop and will need to stay warm. Make sure you have a heavy blanket stored in a plastic bag in the trunk. You can also use the blanket to cover hot parts of the car when performing any type of repairs.
4. Road flares. When you're stuck on a country road or a busy highway during the middle of a storm, you need to make sure other drivers know you need help. Road flares will draw attention to the area you are stuck in and can prevent drivers from running into you. Set these up a good distance from your car and light them as a warning signal. Local law enforcement or a roadside service truck can find you more easily and can help with the situation at hand.
5. Fire extinguisher. If you drive an older car, a fire extinguisher can save you from the repercussions of an engine fire and overheated engine. You can purchase mini fire extinguishers that fit neatly in the trunk and will need to replace them about once every five years.
