5 Things to do with Leftover V8 or Tomato Juice

Squeezing the Last Penny Out of Your Tomato Juice!

Kathryn E. Darden
If you are on a very tight budget in this tough economy or you just hate to waste anything, here are my top five ideas to help you squeeze the last penny out of your leftover V8 or other tomato juice. After you are through pouring your last glass of tomato juice, there is always some leftover tomato juice residue at the bottom of the bottle and on the sides, so pour a cup of water in the bottle and swish it around. Set the bottle back in the refrigerator to save for your next meal. Obviously you want to use this right away since the juice has already been open in your fridge for a couple of days at this point, so plan something for your next meal where you can use it up.

I don't know how much nutritional value is left in those last drops of tomato juice, but V8 is packed with vitamins. And from personal experience, I can attest to the fact that the last little bit of leftover tomato juice, even watered down with a cup of water, can add a hint of color and flavor to soup, rice, and pasta dishes.

There are several ways you can use your leftover tomato juice to give a dish a slightly different color and flavor, especially if you are eating the same inexpensive foods over and over to save money.

1. Leftover Tomato Juice in Spaghetti Sauce - Next time you fix spaghetti sauce, use the cup of water from the tomato juice bottle instead of a cup of tap water

2. Leftover Tomato Juice in in Soup - Instead of adding a cup of tap water to your canned soup or homemade soup mix, add a the cup of water from the tomato juice bottle to give your soup a mild hint of tomato flavor

3. Leftover Tomato Juice in Ramen Noodles - if you are really on a tight budget and eating a lot of Ramen noodles these days like I am, you will appreciate the difference a cup of water from your leftover tomato juice adds to your noodles!

4. Leftover Tomato Juice in Rice Dishes - Use the cup of water from the tomato juice bottle to add a bit of tomato flavor to your rice dishes. I like this particularly well with Spanish rice, but I also like adding the last of my tomato juice to other rice dishes for a slightly different taste and color.

5. Leftover Tomato Juice as Plant Food - If I don't have anything food-wise to use my leftover tomato juice for, I pour more water in the bottle and use it to water my house plants. I figure they will enjoy the leftover nutrients if the juice is watered down!

You get the idea! You can probably think of other ways to use those last drops of tomato goodness to enhance a dish and change it up slightly. If you do, post a comment and let me know what you did with your leftover tomato juice or V8!

Great tips! I have never seen anyone that can get the last drop plus what is on the sides without using a little water. I know that's what my wife and I do, but we are usually cooking something to add it to right then and don't have to save it. Great article my friend!

Thanks ladies! Charlene, you know how long our stories sit in line for an upfront payment - I had already added chili, salsa, bar-b-q sauce and cocktails to my article for eHow (which was just published this morning at http://www.ehow.com/how_4788724_tomato-juice-v-good-use.html) before this one ever got published! :-)
