If proper oral hygiene is not followed, your dog can suffer from dental diseases just as humans can. Dental diseases commonly occur due to plaque and tater accumulation, known as periodontal disease. Periodontal disease can easily be prevented if proper oral hygiene for dogs is used. By taking a few minutes every day to prevent dental disease in dogs you will ensure your dog maintains healthy teeth throughout their lifespan.

Daily Evaluation

Every day you should conduct an evaluation of your dog's mouth. Every day look in your dog's mouth for any obvious signs of complications. Signs to look out for include red and swollen gums, broken or missing teeth and tarter and plaque accumulation. If you notice any of these, these are the first signs of dental disease in dogs and you should take your dog to the veterinarian right away. Look for any injuries to the gums and lips as well because these can result in an infection or further complications.

Brushing Teeth

Just as humans, dogs need their teeth brushed every day as well to prevent oral complications. Using a toothbrush and tooth paste designed for pets, brush your dog's teeth at least once a day. While it is best to begin brushing your dog's teeth when they are a puppy, it is never too late to begin practicing good oral hygiene with your dog. If your dog is older, you will need to get your dog accustom to having their teeth brushed, which may take some time.

Correct Diet

Believe it or not, feeding your dog the correct food can actually prevent dental disease in dogs. You should use dog foods that are designed to reduce plaque and tarter and foods that promote dental health. Do not give your dog sticky foods, sweet snacks or table scraps because these can all decrease the health of teeth, which may led to dental disease.

Correct Toys

Toys make a difference as well when is comes to preventing dental disease in dogs. There are toys that are made to prevent dental disease in dogs. Ropes and dental approved chew toys are great for reducing plaque and tater on dogs teeth.

Regular Check-ups

Preventing dental disease also involves regular check-ups with your veterinarian. With regular check-ups, your veterinarian can treat any possible dental complications that may occur. Plus, your dog's teeth will be cleaned regularly as well, preventing dental disease.
