5 Things Single Moms Can Do to Stay Sane

Wendy Brock
Whether you have one child or five, it can sometimes feel they are trying to drive you out of your mind. When you have a million things to do, errands to run, housecleaning lists, laundry piling up, and bills to manage, it seems they are always there needing a juice box. Of course you love your kids, but sometimes you have to stop, take a deep breath, and love yourself too. Stay sane and do something for you for a change.

Put the kids to bed early. You are the boss and you get to set the rules. Tell them they have to go to bed when you say so and implement the new rule every night until they get accustomed to the new schedule. You have to be tough and not break because if you let them have their way, they will never give you yours. When you put them to bed early, you can have a few night time hours to yourself before you go to sleep. Enjoy a nice, peaceful evening to pamper yourself because you deserve it.

Take a hot bubble bath. Light some candles. Have a glass of wine. Go ahead and do it because who is going to call social services on you for enjoying yourself? To make your bath time extra special, sprinkle a half a cup of powdered milk in the running water. It will soften your skin.

Give yourself a spa treatment at home. Want a professional facial or pedicure but can't afford it because you're paying endless dollars to the diaper makers? Give yourself an at-home treatment that gives you the same results.

Talk to your friends. If you don't have any friends, get out and make some. It's important to have other single mom friends that can relate to you and have the same responsibilities as you. You can also babysit for each other so you can take turns going out.

Go on a date. If you have a boyfriend, make sure you're not only spending time with him when the kids are running wild and you're stressed. You need to have personal time with him, whether it's over dinner or out to a movie. You may not be able to get out as much as you like, but its well worth finding a babysitter in order to get a break from your kids and spend time with your man.

Take time for yourself and you'll find that being a mom isn't that stressful. Balancing your life as a mom and as a person can help you stay sane and keep you from being one of those psycho moms who kill their kids featured on the nightly news. You give all your attention to your kids, now it's time give some of that attention to yourself.
