5 Things We All Can Do to Reduce Global Warming

Chris Marcum

You cannot go anywhere these days without hearing about the effects on global warming. In fact, in the past month, things have seemed to look pretty gloomy on the topic of global warming. So here are a few things we all can do to help prevent any further damage to our atmosphere and planet. There are five easy ways to help reduce pollution.

We have all heard reuse, recycle and renew. Keep these words in mind when going green. Reuse can be done every time we visit a grocery store. Instead of using the paper or plastic bags the store has, bring along your own canvas bag. Many grocery stores are carrying them this days to encourage customers to go green. They can also be found at your local discount store like Wal-Mart. I suggest one for every person in your household. If you must use the bags that the store provides then find creative ways to reuse those bags or recycle them.

Recycling is something that everyone can do no matter where you may live. In the county that I live in we do not have curbside recycling but there are several locations that we can take our recyclables. I try to take my recyclable to the drop off locations when I am headed to the grocery store. Use plastic tubs to sort your different recyclable products. (ex. one for newspaper, one for plastics, one for aluminum and another for glass.) Be sure to rinse out your cans and bottles before placing them in your tubs. Many places also have curbside recycling check with your re-cycler for instructions they may have.

Use renewable resources whenever possible. For example have your outside lights on solar power. Solar power and wind power are two of the best renewable resources we can use. There is also wood, but burning wood also still releases toxins into the air. It also take along time for a tree to reach maturity. Consider going all solar in your home I have found several websites that will install solar panels on your home for free and with no maintenance fee. You simple pay them for the energy that you use. This is a great way to help reduce pollution and doesn't have the initial sticker shock that installing your own solar panels may cause.

Many of us are not ready yet to convert to solar power but conserve energy by turning off the lights and other appliances like the television when you are not in the room. This will help your pockets as well as the environment. We can also conserve energy by turning down the heat in the winter. Try wear a sweater around the house and turn your thermostat down a few degrees. This method will also work in the summer months, as well. Keeping your home a little less cool will just make you more comfortable when heading outside into the heat. Another great way to conserve energy is to line dry your clothes. This can be done inside as well as outside on a traditional line.

The final easy way to go green that I have for you is to conserve gas. Make fewer trips in your car by combining your outings. Do all your shopping and other outings on one trip. If you are driving to work car pool with others to reduce the amount of pollution we make with our cars. If you must drive be sure to have your tires properly inflated and drive the speed limit, these will both help conserve gas.

We may not be able to go all green, but we all take small steps in the direction of green living. Everyone can do at least one of these easy ways to go green and possible save you some green at the same time.
