5 Tips to Avoid Getting Seasick

If you are prone to motion sickness, you will never experience it at more revolting level than if you become seasick. Most victims of seasickness have found themselves wishing for death to come and give them relief from their suffering. People who have experienced being seasick once will go to great lengths to avoid facing it again. Typically, they will simply become land lovers and reject any attempts at boarding a sea-going vessel. This is a shame because by following a few simple rules, most seasickness can be held at bay.

Use medications to lessen the effects of motion sickness.

Scopolamine patches are the most widely used seasickness remedy. This handy little adhesive bandages are placed on the neck of a person who suffers with motion sickness. Most people discover that the cure is completed at this point. Medication travels from the patch through your skin and into your body at a slow constant rate. Patches can be worn for 12 to 24 hours before they need replacing. You will need a prescription to be able to buy these patches.

Over-the-counter medications will offer some help.

Dramamine is probably the most widely known of these medications. It must be taken ahead of time to be effective. To maximize its effectiveness, most Dramamine users say that it is best to start taking the pills about a day before you expect to need them to work. However, with Dramamine, some people say they still need to take other precautions to prevent seasickness.

Along with medication, use some common sense actions.

Try to stay in a place where there is a cool breeze blowing over your face. For some reason, this helps motion sickness as much as any other remedy. An air conditioner vent might become a great place to hang out if you feel the twinges of seasickness. On a large ship, go on deck so that the wind can hit you. Most of the time, just the blowing wind will make the seasick feeling subside quickly.

Avoid staring at close objects or reading if the ship has much of a rocking movement.

Keep your eyes focused on the horizon or the sky. This will change your perspective about the amount of movement that you are enduring. It is roughly the same effect as staring at the road ahead of you when riding in a car. By viewing the big picture, it lessens the effects of the ship's movement on your motion sickness. On large vessels like a modern cruise ship, there rarely is enough movement to even need to do this.

Keep yourself distracted with activity.

This may sound a little ineffective on the surface, but the effects of the motion will be less if you do not allow yourself to dwell on it. However, you do need to choose your activities wisely. If you think that seasickness may be in your future, avoid activities that require you to stare at a still surface that can emphasize the movement. Playing cards is probably not a good selection. Looking at pictures or putting a puzzle together should also be on the do not do list. Better activities would be walking, jogging, or watching a show if you are on a cruise ship.
