5 Tips for Avoiding Dehydration on Your Las Vegas Vacation

Paul Nilsen
Dehydration can sneak up on you under the hot Las Vegas sun, and its symptoms can easily ruin your day, if not your whole Vegas vacation. Dehydration causes muscle cramps, dizziness, fatigue, and dry mouth. Although the solution to dehydration may seem simple, here are some other tips to keep in mind to
keep yourself healthy in the heat of your Las Vegas vacation.

#5 - Avoid High Noon

If you plan on taking a long walk down the Vegas Strip, save it for early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the sun is a little weaker. The same goes for lounging out by the pool. The intensity of the sun is strongest around noon and that means you'll sweat more and get dehydrated faster. Scheduling indoor activities around noon will lower your risk of dehydration.

#4 - Drink Some Things In Moderation

Namely alcoholic and caffeinated beverages. Both are diuretics and every drink you have is going to cause you lose water faster. If you're drinking outside you're only go to lose water that much faster. If for some reason you can't drink in moderation, then try and save your drinking for later in the evening and try to drink as much water as your drink alcohol to keep your body balanced.

#3 - Drink Water In Excess!

This is a no-brainer. Optimally, you should be drinking water when you're not even thirsty to ensure that you're properly hydrated throughout the day. Don't be tempted into drinking sugary energy drinks as a substitute. For most of these drinks, the sugar is just going to make you thirstier sooner so avoid that by sticking to regular water, which is what your body needs. If you are feeling the effects of dehydration, make sure you sip water, and don't gulp it! Drinking too fast when dehydrated can make you vomit.

#2 - Don't Eat Very Large Meals

Although the all you can eat buffets are very tempting, try and eat regular sized meals. Your body utilizes water for digestion and eating large meals and going out in the sun is going to cause you to get dehydrated much more rapidly. It goes without saying that you should be drinking a lot of water regardless of what you're eating.

#1 - Let The Restroom Be Your Guide

Granted, this sounds a little strange, but it's a good guideline. You lose a lot of fluids when you use the restroom, so remind yourself to grab a bottle of water every time you use the restroom. This will help keep your water level in balance. When dehydrated, your body will actually hold water back and you won't go to the bathroom as much so if you havent used the bathroom all day, that might be a reason to get some water too!

Ultimately, the name of the game here is to keep drinking water and to stay out of the sun for prolonged periods of time. When in doubt, there's no so safer place to enjoy your vacation than at the air conditioned splendor of one of Vegas' fine casinos, where you can get all the water you want for free (just keep those bets coming).
