Tip #1 - Do Not Make Things More Complicated Than They Need To Be
One of the best pieces of advice that can be given to a working mom is that simplicity is the key to happiness. Many professional moms try to compensate for their absence at home by keeping their kids enrolled in sports, activities and after school programs. While these things can be beneficial and necessary in some cases, it is a good idea to limit how "busy" you keep your family. Instead of jamming three extracurricular programs into your children's schedule, look for one activity that your child is really interested in or that you can do as a family.
Tip #2 - Stay Organized
Another tip that can help you to manage your career and family responsibilities is to keep things organized. A simple desk calendar can be used to create a visual schedule of appointments, deadlines and special events. It can be used to identify when and where your kids will be during the week.
Tip #3 - Communicate With Your Family
Communication is key to managing a company successfully and it is also key to managing your family. A communication system for families needs to include rules for when communications need to be used and rules for how communications are to be used. For example, you can make it a rule to be non-judgmental when communicating with your kids. Communication systems also need to be two-way. To facilitate this you need to make your kids feel like they can talk to you about anything. Also remember to talk to your kids about what they are doing in school, how things are going with their friends and what they are interested in at the moment.
Tip #4 - Know When to Have Fun
Balancing business and family life is like working 24 hours a day seven days a week. It is because of this that you need to know when it is time to put away the cell phones and schedules and to just have fun as a family. You can all go to a movie, go camping or do something else that you all enjoy to do together.
Tip #5 - Make Time for Yourself
Everyone needs private time where they can just relax, unwind and focus on what they need to be happy. Making time for yourself is a great way to do this when you are a working mom. You can use your personal time to meet up with friends, to take a class or to be pampered at a spa.
