Before you begin setting goals, here's something to consider first:
Decide what is really important to you. Once you do that, separate what's important from the unimportant things in your life. Doing this helps you make sure your focus is in the right place. It also helps you make sure that your goals are your own and that you aren't just trying to please someone else.
How To Set Goals - 5 Tips for Effective Goal Setting
Be Specific- Make sure your goal has a start date, an end date, an amount, etc. Being specific gives you a step-by-step formula to follow, which makes meeting that goal much easier.
Write Your Goals Down- Writing your goals down will help you stay focused on what you are supposed to do, when you are supposed to do it, and why you are doing this. Check off your tasks as you complete them and you will be able to chart your progress easily.
Keep Your Priorities In Order- When you have more than one goal, take them one at a time in the order of importance. This will help you not be overwhelmed and lose focus. By doing the most important things first and the least important last, you will find that each new task will be easier than the last.
Make Your Goals Realistic- Be realistic when you set your goals. Many times we want to be able to achieve something without really knowing all the steps we would have to take in order to get there. Will specialized training or education be needed before you can get to where you want to be? If so, work it into your overall plan. Being realistic greatly increases your chances of success.
Don't Set Your Goals Too Low- Don't be so afraid of failing that you set your goals to low. Ideally, you should set the goal a little higher than what you think you can achieve, but not so high that you could never do it. If you think there is no way you can do something, you won't try as hard and you won't do it.
So there it is. Some very simple steps you can take to get started setting and achieving your goals. You need to keep in mind that as you start working through your goals you may learn things about yourself that may change your goals. You may also fail to meet a goal. This is ok as long as you learned something from it. Make the necessary adjustments to your plan and keep moving forward.
