Eliminate magazines and newspapers - how many magazines to you buy to let sit around the house unread. With magazines averaging a $4 cover price this can add up. If you absolutely must read the magazine each month a least get a subscription which is usually 50 - 60 % off the cover price. To really save money, read the magazine at the library for free. The same goes for the newspaper. Instead of buying on the newsstand, get a subscription, read it in the library or online for free.
Buy in bulk when you can. Larger size containers are cheaper per unit. You should buy all your non-perishable items in bulk as space allows. Get a notebook and figure out how long each container will last you. The initial outlay of cash may seem more but when you don't have to replace the item for 3 or 4 months it is worth it. You also spend less time and gas going to the store less frequently.
Eat or prepare the majority of your meals at home. Nothing eats into your savings more than eating out during the work day. Stopping for a coffee and bagel in the morning, grabbing a sandwich for lunch, a soda here and there and we can easily spend $10 to $15 a day. With a little planning and preparation a home we can reduce that substantially. Make coffee(which you bought in bulk) at home and put it in a thermos. Make your own sandwich and if you must drink soda, buy cans in bulk and bring it with you. The money you save on the insignificant daily take out food could be
spent on a fine dining experience at a restaurant.
Only buy items on sale. Unless you have an emergency, the water heater burst and must be replaced now, plan on when you will need certain items and always buy on sale. Different categories of goods go on sale at different times of year. If you need a new car, August and early September is the time of year to get great deals on last year's model. Clothing goes on sale with huge discounts just before the season changes. The grocery store puts out a sale flyer every week. You'd be amazed at how much you save if you vow never to pay full retail again.
Leave your credit cards at home and only carry a small amount of cash. If you don't have a way to spend money you won't. How often in a normal day do you really need to spend money. If you bring your food to work, you won't need any cash. Carry one credit card with a low limit which you only use for gas or a car emergency if you must. So often, we spend money just out of habit rather than necessity. You can't be tempted by impulse spending if you don't have any money with you.
Getting control of your spending and saving money eases your stress level. Follow these tips and you can effortlessly save money.
