5 Tips for Every Online Student

Lee Andrew Henderson
In the year 2011 there are many students that are deciding to take online classes for college. Online classes can be very convenient but keep in mind that online classes are very different from regular classes. There are many tips that can be very helpful for any student that is deciding to take online classes for the first time.

At the beginning of a semester a teacher hands out a syllabus. In a classroom when a teacher hands out a syllabus it's almost immediately trashed by everyone in the class but this can be more valuable in an online setting. Online classes give the student more freedom to work at whatever pace they want and having a syllabus on hand will allow a student to work ahead and get things done early if they choose to do so.

Another important tip for online students is to be very familiar with the computer and different forms of multimedia. Even someone who spent all of high school surfing the web and texting friends won't necessarily know how to navigate through forums, conduct video conferences, listen to podcasts or login to skype. If a teacher says at the beginning of the year that one of these forms of multimedia is going to be used then figure it out immediately. Don't wait until the day of a video conference to figure out if you know how to use it.

Many computer users think that Google is just a place to find pictures of Jessica Alba or to search for Justin Beiber videos but Google can be a powerful tool to any online student. Besides the regular Google search engine there is also Google Scholar, which allows online students to search scholarly literature, and Google Books, which allows online students to search through text books.

One of the most difficult aspects of being an online student is not being able to talk to the teacher face-to-face. Sure, when a student goes to a normal class they could never imagine actually missing that annoying teacher but it is easy to see how valuable they when taking online classes. Don't make the mistake of thinking that because the teacher is not face-to-face that it means they aren't there. Figure out the best way to contact a teacher whether it is email, a forum or skype and then use that routinely. Personally I find it even easier to speak to a teacher this way because if you have a question that seems stupid then who cares, the teacher can't even see you.

The most important tip for an online student is to stay motivated. The most difficult problem an online student will encounter is that working from home can be very distracting. If it's possible, don't work in the same room that has a television or stereo. Try and schedule a time to work on online classes when the spouse/children/girlfriend/roommate won't be home. Make a schedule for online classes and stick to it.
