5 Tips to Having a Great College Experience

Scott Martin
College is a wonderful, fun place. However, many don't start enjoying their college experience till later in their experience. Instead of making mistakes that could decrease how much you get out of your college experience, I have compiled a list of five tips to have a great time at college.

First, just get involved. You can get involved in a whole variety of things. There are literally dozens of clubs and organizations at most schools, if not more. Join one, or two, or however many you feel. Student government is great too. If those aren't really your thing, why not try an athletic team? Whether it be for the school or just for fun playing intramurals, that's always a good choice. Lastly, get a job doing something on campus. You will constantly be in contact and meeting new people while earning some extra cash.

This leads me to the second tip; meet lots of new people. All of the above things mentioned can help you meet new people, usually with some kind of similar interests if you're in a club together. The more people you meet, the more likely you are to find people that you enjoy hanging out with and become close with.

Thirdly, don't party too much. I have seen more than my fair share of freshman who end up failing out their first or second semester due to this. They think that because they are out on their own that they don't need to listen to advice their parents gave them, and they end up going out several times a week and missing or skipping classes. Being someone who has recently been in college, I can completely understand that you may want to go out some. My suggestion is just to be responsible when you are, and don't let it affect your schoolwork.

Which brings me to my forth point, schoolwork should come first. That is why you're in college after all isn't it? Don't neglect your schoolwork for going out, hanging out with all your new friends too much or for your clubs. Make sure that you keep your time in check and have time to not only do the things which you want to, but also the schoolwork you have to.

Lastly, budget your time effectively. Plan out what you need to do and when you need to do it by. Don't save all of your big assignments for the last second. You'll thank yourself later. It is much easier to hack away at them little by little than to try to go through them all at once full throttle. You'll also get better quality this way too. Like I said above, this way you will be able to do all the things at college you'd like to do, while still doing well in college.
