5 Tips to Help You Face Your Fears

Cheryl Williams

Fear has a purpose. It can prevent you from putting yourself into dangerous situations. It can alert you to when you are in a dangerous situation. Fear has another side, however. Fear can hold you back from doing what you need to do to move forward in your life.

Everyone has felt it -- the fear that comes with change or a challenge. Being pushed past your current limits is scary. The truth, however, is that until you allow yourself to face this kind of fear, your life will remain stagnant. If you read the autobiographies of anyone who is successful, you will find that one of the main reasons they are successful is because they walked through their fears. They took risks. They accepted challenges, and learned from their failures.

One of the greatest talents in the world, Barbra Striesand, admits that she has horrible stage fright. To those who enjoy her magnificent voice, it is hard to imagine why she would feel fear at the thought of singing in front of people. To her, the fear is very real. Still, she faces that fear and walks through it. Just imagine if she had never faced her fear. The world would have been robbed of her remarkable talent.

If you find yourself becoming paralyzed by your fear, here are 5 tips to help you:

- Imagine the worst possible scenario if you decide to face your fear. Most of the time, it is the fear itself that is paralyzing. Little thought is actually given to what could possibly happen in facing your fears. The truth is, you will find that the worst possible scenario is not nearly as horrific as you might think.

-Imagine the best possible scenario if you decide to face your fear. Perhaps you will get a promotion at work. Perhaps you will be successful in a new career. Perhaps one of your dreams will finally be realized. Perhaps doors will open for you that you never dreamed possible.

-Just do it. Walk into that fear. Once you are actually taking those active steps, the fear slowly diminishes. You will gain a newfound confidence in yourself.

-Remind yourself that you are human. If you fail at something, it's okay. You will not be the first person to have failed, nor will you be the last. Learn from it and move forward.

-Walking through one fear will give you the courage to walk through your other fears. You will become stronger and more confident each time you face your fears.

If you have trouble facing your fears, sometimes it helps to talk to a professional. A qualified therapist can help you learn to do this. You can also talk to a minister or even a trusted friend.
