5 Tips on How to Prevent Acquaintance Rape

Michelle Knudson

People often think that acquaintance rape can't happen to them. Acquaintance rape can happen to anyone of all ages, race, and gender. Here are five tips on how to prevent acquaintance rape.

Don't Be Alone With Colleagues

Don't be alone with any of your colleagues. Do not let them walk you to your car. It doesn't matter what gender the colleague is that offers to walk you to your car. Rapists occur by both genders. Some women rape other women and men. Some men rape other men and women. Do not think that you know someone pretty well just because you work with them. People wear a different mask at work in front of other people to cover up who they are at home.

Don't Be Alone With Family Members

Keep your guard up around your husband's family. You don't know your brother-in-law very well. You don't know your sister-in-law very well either. You don't know if the Grandfather has a past problem of molesting his daughters, sons, and grandchildren.

Don't be around them unless your husband is there. Don't invite them into your house alone to prevent something from happening to you. You don't even have to answer the door. Make up an excuse about why you can't let relatives in your home when your husband is not there.

Don't Be Alone With New Boyfriend

Don't invite your new boyfriend into your home immediately. Meet him in a public place for a very long time to get know him first. You don't want him to know where you live at in the beginning if he turns into some stalker rapist. Watch for any signs of refusal to take no for an answer about small things and pressure. Make sure to meet his family before you let him into your home.

The way that he treats and speaks about his family says a lot about himself without you even asking questions. If you hear horror stories from his family members about how he treated his other girlfriends then run away immediately.

Keep Your Guard Up Around Friends

Friends can turn into a complete different person when put into certain situations. I am talking about people who you once trusted completely and never thought that would do some terrible things to you.

Some male friends that you've known for ten years can do horrible things like forcing themselves upon you when you sleep. The next thing that you know that friend is inside of you raping you when you were sleeping with heavy sedative drugs in your system. You keep waking up and drifting off seeing your friends face trying to fight him off but you are too drugged from your medicine.

Protect Mental People

Other male friends have done things like sexual abuse mentally ill people. He then turn around telling them that nobody will believe them when the person with mental illness threatens to report it to police. He tells you that you didn't get certified mental for nothing so no one will believe you. He lies to you to convince you that he is right when he is wrong.

The tips mentioned above won't totally prevent acquaintance rape, however, it will help reduce the amount of time that it occurs since you know what to watch out for now.

You need to be leery of friends when you are in a situation where they can hurt you easily with no witnesses. Protect mentally ill people since they are an easy target for sexual abuse to happen to them.

The five ways to help stop is acquaintance rape are to refuse spending any alone time with colleagues, deny family members access to home when alone, and don't be alone with new boyfriend immediately. Don't show boyfriend where you live right away.
