1. Use keywords related to the job that you are applying for. This is especially true if you are applying online. Many of these places will use the computer to scan the resume looking for these keywords. Without these keywords your resume may never make it to the recruiters desk. To find good keywords read the job description carefully and chose several keywords that they have in their description and use them in your resume if they apply to you. You may have to adjust your resume for each position that you are applying for but it will get your resume noticed.
2. Use short concise phrases. This is just an overview of your past employment skills not a novel about what you did on your previous jobs. Using the proper keywords you want to make the shortest statement that you can while saying what you did. The resume is selling yourself to the potential employer and making them want to call you in for an interview.
3. Proof read your resume. Always use spell check for spelling and grammar errors. Once an employer find spelling errors they usually won't give it a second look.
4. Look over the appearance of your resume before sending it. If you are mailing it the last thing that you will want to do is to print it on the back of paper that you wrote notes on, (yes we have received resumes like this). Use the proper size envelope and print on white paper. Colored paper will usually not help with job searches. You want to look professional. If you are mailing in the resume do include a cover letter that gives the recruiter a few sentences about why are you qualified for the position.
5. Make sure your resume is easy to read. Find a template online to use or in your word processing program you may have resume templates. Don't just jot a few sentences down on a paper and submit it. Make it so that all the facts are laid out in some order.
If you make a base resume, you can always update it and tweak it for each position that you are applying for. Sometimes you will want to add things or delete things depending on the position you are applying for.
