1. Containers
Your mailing box should be fairly small, so the movement of the cookies en route won't destroy them. Coffee or Pringle's containers make the perfect vessel to store your cookies in. Not only will it keep them tight and whole in travel, but it will keep them fresh as well. Make sure you clean them out first, so that any scents are gone, and place your cookies inside. When you make the cookies, it would be easiest to use the containers as a reference for size. This way you will be able to customize your cookies appropriately for safe delivery.
2. Individually wrapped
As painstaking as it will be, you will have to individually wrap each cookie. In some cases, especially with smoother surfaced varieties, you can place them back-to-back and then wrap them. This will give each cookie its own padded space, so they are more likely to arrive intact.
3. Sturdy Varieties
Before you make your cookies, you should be sure to make only the 'sturdy' varieties if you are planning on shipping them across the country. Biscotti, gingersnaps, and sugar cookies, make the best shipping cookies. On the other hand, large, soft cookies may be less likely to make it without turning into a crumbly mess. So choose wisely; your cookie variety can make all the difference.
4. Cushioning
Along with individually wrapping or double wrapping your cookies, you should put some bubble wrap in the open spaces of the package for mailing. It also helps to ziplock like varieties together (i.e. if you keep minty smelling cookies in a ziplock they will be less likely to spread their taste to just plan chocolate cookies). Don't pack them too close to the opening or the bottom, as your package will have other packages over and under it as it travels to its destination.
5. Overnight Deliveries
Although this can be expensive, overnight delivery is the only way to ensure fresh cookies. This shipping method will be 'softer' on your contents as it will not be traveling as long.
If you don't want to spend the money on overnight delivery, be sure to have the package labeled fragile on all exposed sides. Also, you can pack the cookies in a tin and add a piece of bread to keep them fresh. If you follow these five tips, your cookies should arrive in great condition.
