With the economy the way it is, you may think that you won't be able to go on vacation this year. There are many ways that you can save money on vacation while still having a great time. Here are 5 great tips that will save you money while on vacation.

1. Take along a cooler. There are many picnic tables along the sides of roads; you can find these at rest stops on the internet and at many parks. Instead of going to restaurants stop at the grocery store along the way before going out on the road and get things to make a picnic lunch. Many of the grocers have delis that will already have some of the foods prepared for you. Buy fruits and fruit drinks to snack on along the way. It's a great way to save money and to relax.

2. Buy gift cards before going on vacation. You can get gift cards for fuel, grocery stores, and even Visa and Master Card prepaid cards that you can use during your trip. This makes it easier to budget your trip and have cash available. Many online auctions have gift cards that you can purchase at less than the value on the cards. This will help you save even more money on things that you purchase.

3. Plan your trip carefully. Choose things that are less expensive so that you don't make a hasty decision that will cost you more money. Choose entertainment that is low cost or free. Many parks are free and will offer great things for a family to do such as nature walks or bike rentals.

4. Souvenirs can add up quickly. Instead of buying these at stores that are more expensive, check out the local chain stores such as WalMart or K-Mart many times these stores will have items that will make great souvenirs at a discounted price. Limit the number of souvenirs that you purchase opting instead to take photos that you can print and make a scrap book when you get back home.

5. Use the Internet to find the best deals on hotels and car rentals. Since these can vary greatly, check online for the best prices. Booking early will sometimes get you a better price than if you just stop and get a room that night.

Using these tips will save you money and you will still be able to take that vacation. Vacations don't have to break the bank they should be about spending time with your family and enjoying days off from work while being with families and loved ones.
