1. What makes your small business amazing?
It is a question every small business owner should ask themselves. Sure it is easy to provide excellent customer service, show up on time, and provide professional service. The thing is, that's not amazing. Any one of your competitors could do that. Customers have come to expect nothing but the best when it comes to their role as a consumer. So what makes you awesome?
What is the one thing you do different from the competition? Every small business should have some of action that when provided to a customer they think to themselves, "wow, that's pretty cool"
A good example of this could be calling a customer the day their package is suppose to arrive at their house. You could use your tracking number to find out when a package will be delivered. On the delivery day you could call the customer to ask/remind them about their delivery. This would show the customer that you went out your way to show them you care about them as a customer.
2. Don't know how to be amazing?
If you aren't sure on what you can do to make your small business amazing don't be afraid to ask. Create a focus group or surveys to find out what your customers value when it comes to customer experience. Find out what it is they want from you as a company and then do it better.
Say your customers wanted better shipping rates. Instead of offering them lower shipping rates why not give them free shipping. They want more choices for house calls? Offer 24/7 services. If it is what's important to your customers then you as a business owner could find a way to make it work.
3. How to be amazing to everyone.
One thing you will learn eventually is that no two customers are ever alike. What makes one customer happy might do nothing, but make another customer more furious than before. Customers just tend to have different expectations on how things should be handled.
Because of this you should treat each customer problem individually. Show them that you want to make sure they are happy by asking them what they would like you to do about. I have found that when I run into a customer service problem, be it my fault or the customers, I always apologize first and then ask what they would like done. Nine times out of ten they will just ask you to fix the problem. They are just happy that you are listening to what they have to say and it makes them feel in control.
Just remember to treat individuals as individuals.
4. Make your employees amazing.
If you have employees make sure that they follow your guidelines and advice how to provide amazing customer service. Before you expect your employees to act amazing you yourself need to lead by example. How can you expect your employees to act accordingly if the boss doesn't practice what he preaches?
Another good way to motivate your employees to be amazing is to provide incentives to the employees who go the extra mile. Can you afford to have professional training or seminars? If so this will help your employees better understand products or aspects of your company you should do that as well.
5. Becoming amazing doesn't happen overnight.
In this day of faster everything we have come to expect or at least want instant gratification on everything. We don't want to wait. We want to know. It will take awhile for the effects of your amazing customer service to show. Just make sure that you stick to your game plan and you will get results.
Also, don't forget to evaluate yourself aver few months. This will help you see the results of your labor. It will help you to figure out what worked and what didn't.
