5 Tips for Small Business Public Relations Strategy Development

Public relations is something that all small businesses need to think about and prepare for when setting up their business plan. The ability to relate to and to communicate with the public is critical for the sustainability of a small business. These abilities allow the small business to attract business, develop customer and market loyalty and mitigate problems that can occur when a crisis situation affects the small business. There are five public relations tips that will help your business develop its public relations strategy.

1. Establish Valuable Relationships

Establishing relationships with the media, with local organizations and with non-profit organizations can all help you to build up a support system that will enable your small business to prosper in both good times and bad. First of all, these relationships can help you to find free and low-cost advertising venues, and secondly, they can be used to control messages that are released to the public during an organizational crisis.

2. Learn How to Communicate Effectively

Knowing how to communicate effectively is another important step in developing a public relations strategy. It is essential that you understand how to format your communications, when to communicate with the public and how the message needs to be developed. If communication is not your strong point, it can be beneficial to work with a professional public relations or communications specialist.

3. Develop a Crisis Communication Plan

Most small businesses base their plans on events that occur when things are normal, and they often forget to plan for when things are not going well. In order to develop a comprehensive public relations strategy, it is important to develop a crisis communication plan. This plan will highlight the steps that the organization needs to take during a crisis, including who will be in charge of communications with the public, how information will be distributed, when it will be distributed and what third parties will be involved.

4. Determine How to Earn Good Will

Good will is a valuable asset for small businesses to develop. It helps to establish customer and public loyalty to the company and it also helps to mitigate public relations problems that could develop in the future. In order to develop good will, small businesses can do a number of things, including supporting local charities, participating in community events and investing company profits in the local economy.

5. Evaluate Your Public Image

Before you develop a public relations strategy you need to step back and evaluate what your public image is right now. Then you need to determine what you want your public image to be like. The final step is to decide the best way to transition your current public image into your desired public image and to then put these methods into action.
