5 Tips for Struggling Students

Jacqueline Winslow
If you have a child that is struggling, you aren't alone. Kids struggling in school is apart of life. No person can be great at everything; that is, unless they are a genius. For the majority of us, we struggle at something. This can be said for school as well. Some subjects we may do well in, others may become a struggling point.

Use these tips to help you with your children to better prepare them for the subjects they struggle in. They may not like the subject, but good grades are obtainable. No matter how difficult it may seem to bring up failing grades, it is possible. They key is keeping them motivated to believing that they can do it. Parents are instrumental in a child's schooling and it takes both parties to really dedicate to bringing up the child's grades.

School is #1

By this, I mean, nothing is more important than school. Extra-curricular activities must come second to getting good grades in school. I know, many people will take issues to this saying that extra-curricular activities are just as important. I disagree. Without the ability to read, write, and do math, you just can't make it out in the real world and be successful. Teach the child right and teach the philosophy that school always comes first.

Homework Is Important

Remember as kid when we found out that we had homework, we would roll our eyes. It is no different for kids today. Homework is dreaded. Make a policy that as soon as school is over, it's off to get the homework done. Either that, or have a designated time for homework. This will help teach the children that no matter how hard something is, determination will help you reach the end goal of bringing up the grades.

Repetition Is Key

Many times, the first time you teach something, it can go straight over the child's head. Help them understand the new concept by giving them extra samples of the same problem. This can help them really master whatever they are learning. If they continue to miss the problems, you can look at each step to see what they are missing. Many times, especially in math, one step can make you miss the entire problem. By helping them figure out each step on the process, a hard math problem becomes easy.

For subjects like Spelling, quizzing the child over and over can really make each spelling or vocabulary word easier. Remember, repetition can and will help your kids have the confidence they need to survive in life.

Breaks are Vital

It sounds odd to give your child a break from school, but if you are pressing them to overcome what they are struggling with, this can be stressful. Taking a day off from homework can give a much-needed break to help them get rejuvenated. Breaks are essential to students!

Make School Interesting

No matter what subject your child is studying, there is a way to make if fun and interesting. Here are some samples that can help you get creative.

History - Whatever subject the child is studying, find something that can help make the history assignment interesting. For the Civil War, find a local history museum to go study. It's always more fun to learn hands on! No matter what the subject, there is always a way to make learning interesting.

Math - Use an online program such as Math to find whatever your child is struggling with and find similar problems to practice on. Practice makes perfection!

Science - Similar to math, there are many online programs to make science come alive. Use WonderWhizKids to let the kids learn science in an entirely different way. Science can be fun if made hands-on. They will learn new things that are interesting, informative, and entertaining.
