1. Know who you're writing for. The subject matter of your blog as well as your target audience should dictate how your blog is written. If you are targeting teenagers or any other young crowd, you definitely don't want the tone of your blog to be too mundane or monotonous. On the other hand, if your blog focuses on a more conservative topic and audience, don't try too hard to be exotic.
2. Keep it interesting. No one wants to continuously read the same tone or view the same black and white web page day in and day out. Liven up your blog by writing in your own voice. Crack a relative joke every now and then (again, audience-appropriate). Put an interesting picture on your site. Keep them entertained while making your point.
3. Get popular. While some people are satisfied simply knowing that their thoughts and commentary are available on the World Wide Web for all to see, many bloggers want to ensure that there's actually an audience receiving their information. There are essentially two measures of blog popularity: through citations (including permalinks on your site) and through affiliation (i.e. blogroll), where other bloggers reference your site and vice versa (Source: Wikipedia.com). The best way to get noticed by other bloggers is to visit their blogs and leave a comment and/or link to their blog from your site. Let them know about your blog as well and they should return the favor.
4. Make your blog rich in key words (SEO). For whatever subject matter you are focusing on, be sure to include key search words all over your blog. This will increase the chances of you being found online and will lead to your increasing popularity.
5. Update your blog regularly. You don't have to necessarily write every day, but you should establish some kind of consistency as to when you update your blog (but you definitely should put new information out there more frequently than once a month). This consistency lets your audience know when to expect new information and keeps them coming back regularly. An outdated blog gets deleted from the "favorites" list pretty quickly.
Incorporating these tips will help improve your content ranking and lead you on the way to being a blogging pro. Happy blogging!
