5 Tips for Successful Job Seeking

Linda Nowlan
There are jobs out there, but after companies have downsized - or "right-sized," to use the fashionable term - nobody is going on a hiring frenzy. Employers are being more selective. And so are job-seekers. Who wants to work for a company that could go belly up in the next downturn? Here are tips on how applicants can package themselves for success.

1. Take your time

You are looking for a career and not just a work. In fact, for more and more people, compensation is less a priority than satisfaction. Sit down, think about what skills you have, what you are good at, what sort of company you would like to work for, and where you are heading. List down the constraints you may have if you get the job.

2. Top up your skills

Technology is increasingly being applied across sectors. If you are not computer literate, it is time to remedy that with an intensive course on the internet. Spend a little money for computer course to get a better salary offer. Required to speak other language? Hire a tutor. Think how you can add to your marketability and what skills sets companies are looking for.

3. Network

Do not depend on classified ads only. Checking the classified ads is hardly scratching the surface. Get out there and talk to friends, old customers, former employers, ex-colleagues. Do not be shy to tell them that you are seeking for a job or a better job. Talk to head-hunters too; many offer seminars on how to repackage yourself and jump-start your career.

4. Do your homework

Focus on two or three possibilities. Do not blanket the city with your resume. Tailor each letter to the company you are addressing. A company may not even have an opening, but let it know just what job you want to do. Keep your resume simple but well crafted. Your first goal is to get an interview. When you get a call for an interview, prepare yourself. Do not come to the interview with empty brain. Most job seekers make mistakes by not anticipating what type of questions the interviewers may ask them.

5. Sell yourself

Tell interviewers why the job you are looking for makes sense in your career path and where you see yourself heading. Don't sell yourself short, but don't over promise either. Tell them also that the job you apply for sound interesting and you believe that you are qualified for the job. Show that you can be a leader and still be a loyal team player. Follow up.
