5 Tips for Taking Care of Your Newborn's Skin

Newborn babies are very fragile and taking care of them can often be frightening, especially for first-time parents. It is important to remember that because babies still have premature organs including the largest organ of the body which is the skin, the utmost care should be given when doing things for them such as feeding them and giving them a bath. Here are five tips for taking care of your newborn's skin to help keep you from panicking and injuring the baby's skin.

As babies' skin is very delicate and sensitive, caution should be practiced when handling the stuff you are using to care for your newborn's skin. The towel and bath cloth should not be washed with harsh laundry detergents but at the same time, make sure that it is free from bacteria and other harmful microorganisms.

Hormones from mommy can be passed down to baby so during the first few days, you might notice some 'pimples' or pink spots on their face. This could have been a result of your hormones and should not be a cause of alarm. These will go away naturally on their own. But if not, consulting your health care professional is the best way to go.

Heat rash is fairly common among babies and this is often a result from too much heat and humidity. With your baby's premature sweat glands, small pink pimples can appear usually across the body as a result of not being able to let out the heat from the body. What you can do is clothe your baby with light, loose clothing and when cleaning and drying the skin, make sure that you wipe them dry thoroughly. Also, avoid bundling your baby with too much layers of clothing and avoid keeping the room too hot. You may also want to simply dress your baby in just a diaper.

Cradle cap is something that can be observed in babies as well. This looks like they have dandruff. To get rid of it, apply baby oil on a clean cloth or clean cotton and wipe this over the area. Leave this on for a couple of minutes then shampoo their head using gentle baby shampoo. Afterwards, use a baby brush or comb and it should be easily removed.

Lastly, and the most common newborn experience, is diaper rash. In order to prevent this, apply petroleum jelly before placing on the diaper. This will prevent rashes from ever occurring.
