5 Tips on Taking Your Preschooler Apple-Picking

Christie Silvers
Apple-picking is one of the most enjoyable activities during the fall season. Watching your preschooler do it is even more enjoyable! If you're ready to venture into this territory, then here are a few tips on taking your preschooler apple picking that can make the experience even more enjoyable, as well as memorable!

1) Bring Bug Repellent & Sunscreen - You're obviously going to be outside when you're apple picking, so don't forget to bring the bug repellent and sunscreen. Your preschooler's skin will thank you and you'll be happy about not having to listen to complaints of itchy bug bites.

2) Dress Accordingly - Hats and sunglasses are must-have items when going apple-picking with your preschooler. If you're planning to make a day of it, you'll be outside int he beaming sunlight for several hours. Would you want to be out there without your sunglasses? Of course not! So make sure to bring your preschoolers sunglasses and/or sunhat as well as your own. Since apple-picking season is generally in the cool temperatures of autumn, be sure to bring a jacket. If you go early, you might want to put warmer clothes on the kiddies until the day warms up.

3) Go Early & Enjoy - In all the years that I've been a parent, I've found that getting activities done early in the day is the best thing for preschoolers. Apple-picking is no different. If you go early, you may discover that your favorite orchard is less crowded and more preschooler friendly. You'll be able to relax and enjoy your time together in the cool autumn weather. Be sure to let your preschool do a lot of the apple-picking. Show them the best apples, lift them up to reach different heights, and watch as they pluck their own apples from the tree. Plan to stay for a while and just enjoy the fresh air and introducing your preschooler to the world around them in the form of APPLES!

4) Don't Forget the Camera - All parents should have a digital camera handy when taking their preschoolers for activities. You just never know when they'll do something memorable or just plain hilarious. You'll be able to capture those precious moments when they discover that apples can grow bigger than their little hands. Watch as they find humor in the shape of an unusual apple. Be entertained when they come up with their own ideas about why apple grow on trees. Just bring the camera. You won't regret it.

5) Use Those Apples - Once you're home with your apple-picking bounty, make sure that you let your preschooler help out when you use those apples to make your traditional autumn apple goodies. Your preschooler will find it exciting to watch the apples they picked be turned into pies, cakes, breads, candies, and numerous other yummy eats. Preschoolers are great cooking companions. They love to stir and pour ingredients, and you can centralize them into one location fairly easy since they need to be standing on a chair in order to see what's going on. They aren't going to want to leave all the action and will stay perched on their chair for longer than you'd imagine.

Autumn is a great season to have some togetherness with your family. The temperatures are cooler and the leaves start changing colors. Apple trees are baring their fruits for all to enjoy.
