5 Tips to Teach Your Kids About Money

It's never too early to teach kids about money. Understanding the value of earning and spending money are skills you want to expose your kids to as soon as they can count. Lessons learned early on will assist them as they grow into adulthood.

Teach your kids the real meaning of money. Money is nothing in and of itself. It is what money can get us and how we get money that is important. Money is earned through work and then is spent on goods we need and want.

Give your kids an allowance to teach them how to handle money. Even grade school kids should get a small amount. This gets them used to having money. Help them make decisions on how they will spend their money.

Teach your kids to have spending goals for their money. Find out what item they want to buy. If it is more then their weekly amount, have them make a plan about how much they will save each week to get to the point where they can buy the item.

Teach your kids to save money for the sake of saving. Explain to them about unexpected expenses that may come along where they might need money in a hurry. This is especially true for teenagers who may have cars that need repairs or want to spend money on dates.

Teach your kids to work for their money. Although kids should do regular chores around the house as part of their family responsibility, you can find odd jobs that the kids could earn more money by doing. Encourage your kids to get jobs as soon as they are legally able. This teaches them life skills and responsibility.

By starting to teach your kids about money at an early age and continuing to reinforce the lessons and allowing them to make their own spending decisions, you will help them avoid financial troubles as they become adults.
