Career Builder allows job seekers to search jobs through location, keywords, and job categories. You can also use their advanced search to include job postings within a date range, education level, or type of employment (part-time, contract, etc.). Career Builder also provides tools, advice, and resources for job searching and will e-mail you jobs recommended for you, if you so choose. Career Builder has many jobs available, but may be difficult to navigate at first.
Craigslist is an easy-to-navigate site that has different pages for various locations throughout the United States and beyond. To search for a job on Craigslist, you must first go to the page of your location of choice, and then search the jobs. You can choose to search all jobs or search jobs by a specified field. You can search for jobs that allow telecommuting, are with non-profits, are contract jobs, are part-time or internships. They also have a section called "gigs" that have postings for work that may be either paid of unpaid and can vary from babysitting or cleaning to modeling or acting. Craigslist is very easy to navigate, but you may run into a few opportunities that are not as legitimate as they may seem from time to time. Another pro about using Craigslist is that you do not need to make an account to contact employers about the job they have posted, however many, and possibly most, of the jobs listed do not provide the name of the company hiring in the ad.
Monster offers job searching by keyword and location and also has many job searching tools and resources available on their website. You can post your resume on Monster to have employers search for you, as well. You have to make an account to apply to jobs through Monster, like many other job sites.
Simply Hired allows you to search for jobs by category or keyword and location. You can also browse their job listings by category, location, company, or industry. Their website is very simple and easy to use and also provides salary information, employment trends, and other job tools.
Snagajob is the top site for hourly employment. You can search their jobs by zip code or by their more advanced search - zip code or city, distance, industry, and job title. All of their jobs are hourly rate employment, so you will not find any salaried jobs on their site. This site can be a great resource for students seeking part-time employment, but it will not be a resource for those looking for a salaried career. Snagajob also offers e-mail notification of jobs in your area and provides tools to help you in your search for an hourly job.
Things to remember when searching for jobs online:
- Provide your resume if the employer requests it.
- Make sure your resume is up-to-date and shows your qualifications for the job listed.
- Check your preferred job search websites often.
- Apply as soon as possible to jobs that interest you.
- Provide ways for the employer to contact you (e-mail address, telephone or cell phone number, etc.).
- Check your e-mail often, and reply to prospective employers in a timely manner.
