Mobile phones have come a long way as early versions were big, bulky, and without many features. Additionally, contract plans that reduce the cost of a phone due to commitments didn't initially exist as they do today. Although over the years, contract deals and packages have changed and fluctuated, owning a phone based on a commitment with a recurring monthly payment isn't necessarily for everyone. As a result, prepaid mobile phones have become more and more popular over the past few years. Here are a few of the hottest prepaid phones to consider as gifts for the upcoming holiday season.

There a quite a few manufacturers of modern day mobile phones. Not all of them, however, provide phones for the prepaid market. Phones available as what is also known as a Pay-As-You-Go phone, include models from Motorola, LG, Samsung, Kyocera, and more. LG offers an almost uncountable number of mobile phones on the market. Within the prepaid category, the top rated 5 contains two models from LG. Hanging in at the end, the LG Rumor 2 is a compact slider phone that offers the longest talk time of the bunch with about 330 minutes available with a fully charged battery. Internet features, a built in camera, speaker phone, text messaging, and more make the phone appealing to those that desire the look and feel of a traditional mobile phone. Taking the number 2 spot on the list is the LG Neon. Featuring nearly every modern feature short of a GPS, the Neon provides both the usual features found on a mobile phone along with Internet access (non 3G speeds), and a memory slot in addition to internal memory for listening to downloadable music.

Industry leader Motorola arrives in the top 5, with three hot phones. All of the entries have standard basic mobile features. However, there are some specifics that set them apart. The i465, which holds the top slot, along with number four on the list - the i335, are candy bar style phones that feature iDen band technology and support Bluetooth connectivity. While the i465 is the more flashy of the two and supports the includes the Push-to-Talk (PTT) feature with a QWERTY keyboard, the i335 is the more basic and traditional mobile phone that lacks a built in camera and other modern features. Motorola's W755 also made the list, coming in at number three, as a revamped razor style clam-shell phone. With features found on most average phones, the W755 is notably built quite sturdy compared to other flip models.
