5 Top Ways to Keep Your Dog Healthy

Keep Your Dog Healthy by Following These Top Tips

1) Yearly vet check. The yearly checkup gives the veterinarian a chance to give advice about diet. At each stage of a pets life their dietary and nutritional needs will can change. A yearly exam is a perfect time to take care of vaccinations. The vet will also perform a fecal exam to check for intestinal parasites and a heartworm exam to ensure that the dog does not have a heartworm infection.

2) Heartworm prevention medication. Every dog should be on heartworm prevention medication. Heart worm is 100% preventable and the monthly medicine is fairly inexpensive. Puppies should be started on heartworm prevention medicine at the age of 8 weeks and then tested for heartworm at 7 to 8 months of age. Ask your vet if your dog requires heartworm prevention medicine all year long. In certain geographical areas heartworm prevention medication is only needed during the summer months when mosquitos are active.

3) Daily vitamin. Just like us dogs need daily vitamins and minerals to prevent deficiancy. Dogs are wild animals and we are feeding them an un-natural dry cooked food. No matter how hard we try science is not yet able to make a food that provides your dog 100% of the nutrients their bodies require. You can easily provide the vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that are lacking from your dogs diet with a high quality daily vitamin.

4) Spay and neuter. Male dogs should be neutered before the age of six months and female dogs should be spayed before their first heat. Spaying reduces the agression of male dogs, decreases the incidents of marking, and reduces the risk of prostate and anus problems. In female dogs spaying reduces the risk of breast cancer, uterine cancer, and mood swings. Spaying and neutering does lower a dogs energy level, so a spayed or neutered dog will require less food.

5) Tooth cleaning and care. A dogs mature teeth need to last them a lifetime. Dogs are just as susceptible to plaque, tarter, and bad breath as we are. We are able to brush and floss daily, but our dogs are not able to clean their own teeth which leaves the care of our dogs to teeth to us. There are new products that make brushing your dogs teeth easier and supplements that can be added to your dogs water to reduce plaque and tarter. Ideally your dogs teeth should be brushed daily, however if you are unwilling to brush your dogs teeth daily please at least brush your dogs teeth weekly.

Along with daily or weekly tooth brushing every responsible dog owner should be adding Plaque Off to their dogs daily water. Plaque off is a liquid that is added to your dogs daily drinking water. The ingredients in plaque off reduces your dogs plaque and tarter, aids your dogs digestive systems, lowers your dogs fecal odors, and prevent grass urine burns. This inexpensive preventative measure is so easy to use and has great advantages that every dog owner should immediately begin using this product.

    1) Yearly check ups are good but yearly vaccinations are not good. It can and will damage your dogs immune system, your dogs immune system has a memory. 2) try Flea Away not only does it repel fleas, it repels masqitoes(spelled it wrong). No dogs have had any bad reactions to it. 3) alot of dog vitamins contain way to much lead. Also, natural dog food is the way to go purina, pedigree, eukunuba, iams and science diet are not good at all. try foods like Halo and wellness for example. 4) Its best to wait for your female dog to be full grown before you spay it, to avoid serious health problems such as bladder cancer, thyroid problems, and bone cancer, since spayed and neutered dogs are at an incresed risk for that. same goes for males. Alterd males are at an incresed risk for prostate cancer and joint problems.

Nice article Crystal. Do you think you can write one up on the proper way to brush your dogs teeth. My bro just got a new puppy and he is having trouble figuring this part out. Thanks
