1. Celebrate your own heritage, no matter what it is.
While a very large percentage of people in the United States can claim some Irish ancestry, not everyone can. Why not use the occasion to celebrate your own unique heritage? Most people in the United States can claim an eclectic ancestry made up of many nationalities from all continents. Don't just honor your Irish heritage or lack of it.
2. Throw a wine and cheese party instead.
Most people automatically associate St. Patrick's Day with one thing: Beer. Why not buck the trend and invite your wine-loving friends over for a wine and cheese party instead? Some people would automatically assume that it would be stuffy, but it doesn't have to be that way. Not in the least. Just have your friends bring over a bottle of their favorite red or white, provide a bottle or two of your own along with the cheese and music, and you have the makings of a very memorable party.
3. Get the whole family together.
In recent years, St. Patrick's Day has turned into a more adult-oriented celebration. Instead, it might be fun to throw a more family-oriented get-together. Include plenty of games, food, and drinks that kids love. Don't forget the adults though! Be sure to have plenty of beer, wine, and foods that cater to more adult tastes as well. You really can throw a party that includes everyone.
4. Go snowmobiling or skiing.
Why not get away for the weekend instead? During the first half of March (at least in Michigan), the weather is at least starting to get better (warmer), but there is normally still plenty of snow on the ground. It is the perfect opportunity to make that last snowmobiling or skiing trip for the year. Odds are that you will be able to find some great weekend packages and deals.
5. Book a romantic get-away.
Did you have a disappointing Valentine's Day? Why not celebrate it approximately a month later? It is a great time of year to book a romantic get-away for two. Your significant other will greatly appreciate it. Isn't that better than going on a pub-crawl with your friends and having a horrible hangover the next day?
These are but a few ideas on how to celebrate St. Patrick's Day without going on a bar/pub crawl, drinking way too much green beer, or traveling to Chicago or New York. With a little imagination, you can make St. Patrick's Day a truly unique experience worthy of becoming a proud family tradition. There is no need for it to simply remain a celebration for those of Irish heritage and adults. Everyone can have fun. You don't need to spend a whole lot either. All it takes is good company and a few good ideas for recreation and/or entertainment.
