Vacation heaven doesn't begin to describe the wonders of the Fiji archipelago. With 110 inhabited and over 220 uninhabited islands, Fiji delivers a diverse experience in the way of tropical vacations. The traditional things, such as touring, swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing and shopping are always entertaining. Fiji vacationing kicks things up a notch. These are some extraordinary activities every traveler should at least try once while visiting the Islands.

Kava or Yaqona Ceremony

Kava is the national drink in Fiji. All Fijian ceremonies are marked by drinking Kava or Yaqona as it symbolizes respect and goodwill. Before the Lovo and Meke feasts, the villagers pour water over ground kava root powder straining it into a large wooden bowl. It looks like a big bowl of muddy river water. The flavor is definitely an acquired taste ranging some where between a mixture of cold chamomile and lavender tea.

Those wishing to partake of the kava drinking ritual are asked to sit before the large bowl. A thick decorated rope attached to the bowl is pointed to the chosen guest of honor. A small bowl is dipped into the large ceremonial bowl. The small bowl is present to the guest of honor first who must clap before receiving the bowl. The bowl must be drained all at once and handed back followed immediately by a clap. The bowl is refilled for the next person. The drink has a slightly numbing effect on the mouth and creates a feeling of euphoria. It is no wonder the villagers are full of smiles and so happy. The saying goes, "The best things in life are free."

Sabeto Mud Pool and Hot Springs

Speaking of muddy water, the Sabeto Mud Pool and Hot Springs is a truly decadent and therapeutic experience. The area is simple with several geothermal pools. There is a small admission of $10 Fiji (approximately 5 USD). Stepping into the warm black mud is a little strange at first, but exciting. Exiting the mud bath, make sure all body parts are covered thoroughly with mud. Now the mud must bake on as you stand in the sun. Once the mud is dried, it's back to the mud to rinse the dried mud off. Then, off to a hot springs pool for a nice warm soak.

Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple

Located in Nadi, this Hindu temple is a must see and do. Sri Siva Subramaniya is the largest temple in the southern hemisphere. It is a fantastic cultural and architectural wonder. The history and beauty located at the temple is profound. The temple is open daily from 5:30am to 8:00pm.

Hiking

What is so unusual about hiking is it is through rain forests. Catching sight of unbelievable landscapes, waterfalls and wildlife is breathtaking. Visiting the destination called Bouma Falls located on Taveuni in the National Heritage Park was a surreal experience. This area can be seen in the Hollywood film 'Return to the Blue Lagoon'. Tours can be arranged with varies companies before visiting the islands. Prices vary based upon the number of days you wish to spend trekking through the land. Hiking can be done with your own travel group as many paths are clearly marked by the villagers.

Sawa-i-Lau Caves

The Sawa-i-Lai Caves require that you know how to swim. The entrance of the caves is under water. To reach the inside of the caves, it is necessary to take a dip and swim through. Entering the cave, the gorgeous beauty surrounding and inside creates a feeling of awe. To get to the island a charter is necessary. Prices vary based upon charter. Arrangements should be made in advance with plans to spend at least 2 days for this expedition.

With such unusual things to do, Fiji is a top-notch destination for vacation travel. Drink a little kava, relax and enjoy all the astonishingly beautiful activities.
